Sony’s E3 conference started strong, and Guerrilla Games contributed to it with a first look at their brand new IP Horizon: Zero Dawn.
Set on a post-apocalyptic Earth, after darkness seemingly engulfed the world, and focussing on the different tribes of humanity that have sprung up in its wake, the gameplay video showcased a female protagonist as she hunts a number of different mechanoid beasts that superficially resemble eighties sci-fi creatures Zoids. Primarily using a bow and a grappling hook, smaller creatures are relatively easy pickings, though as seen in the trailer the Watcher enemy type will alert other monsters to your presence. Larger beasts are clearly tougher, requiring dodging and utilising different tactics to target their weak spots. Some elements of taking down such a huge creature reminded me of the Monster Hunter franchise.
The game looks incredibly well detailed, which isn’t surprising given that Guerrilla’s other PS4 exclusive Killzone: Shadow Fall is still amongst the best-looking titles on the platform. It’ll be interesting to find out if this is a story-centric or multiplayer-focussed title as either seems possible, but either way I’m hugely excited by the game’s possibilities.

One of the biggest jaw-droppers for sure. I’m loving everything we’ve seen so far.

Not quite sure yet what to make of this. The mechanical beast didn’t feel as threatening as it should’ve been.

This looks like a great game from a great developer. Guerilla Games deserve more praise than they get for their continued support of Shadow Fall. I’m sure that they’ll continue the trend for Horizon in the year or so after release. Can’t wait for this to be released!

I’m excited for this new Guerilla IP, it looks stunning as i would expect from them after what they achieved with Killzone SW. Can’t wait to see more of it.
