Swiss Retailer Prices PlayStation VR At £350

How much will PlayStation VR cost? More than Oculus Rift? Less? All we know is that Sony have said it will be priced as if it were a new format, so that means expensive.

However, a Swiss retailer has broken ranks and listed the device at  498 Swiss francs, which is roughly around €455 or £360, give or take the odd quid. That’s within the price range we are hoping for, but is it correct?

Hopefully Sony will release the official price very soon.

  1. That sounds a reasonable price compared to Oculus Rift. I now its, not as high quality as O.R. but it’s just about within my biting point.

  2. This is just a placeholder, I believe OR had a similar placeholder price. Id be betting the PS VR will be priced around the same price as the PS4 when it launched, any higher could be detrimental to Sony.

  3. Now if they added a delivery date…

    • When I saw this yesterday it had the release date as June. But like the price it hasn’t been confirmed by Sony.

      • Yup it has, 1st Half 2016, so June 30th at latest

      • But didn’t Sony say 1st quarter?

      • They said Q1 of 2016 not first half. Though I am begining to think Sony won’t be releasing it Q1. Are they waiting for GDC to announce pricing and release date? Seems unlikely they would as the GDC is not aimed at consumers. They want to be announcing something by feb in order to maintain there Q1 release.

      • Agreed, if it’s a Q1 release you would’ve expected an announcement by now or very soon.
It doesn’t matter that GDC is not for consumers as all the press will be there.

  4. Leaks like this worry me. It sets up a false hope that if not met by the real price, damages it’s chances of succeeding.

  5. That’ll probably work out at €499 in Ireland. I can’t see anyone paying more than that.

  6. I think that’s about what it will cost. They’ll make it up with the camera & move controllers, and I suspect the games will have a higher rrp.

  7. Does anyone know of you can use it for standard use say of I wanted to plug my sky box in it and watch the 3d channel

    • Now that would be awesome, but I highly doubt there’s any universal compatibility. I doubt, for example, that you could use PSVR on PC or any other platform/technology.

    • The screens in the headset are more square than a widescreen TV, you’d have half the film cut off.

So no, basically. Same goes for any VR unit I would have thought, films would have to be formatted especially for it.

      • Isn’t it full 1080, but split between the 2 eyes, giving a weird 8:9 aspect ratio. So the best you could hope for would be watching your films letterboxed, in standard definition. Which is going to be horrible when it’s right in your face.

Mind you, 3D TVs using passive glasses are the same resolution, and that seems to work. But the split is in a different direction and the 2 images are effectively on top of each other. Seems to work because all the 3D information is horizontal, so halving the vertical resolution doesn’t matter as much.

Shame they couldn’t have gone for full 1920×1080 per eye, really. Would that add much to the cost? But then you’d need to churn out twice the number of pixels, and the PS4 would struggle doing that at a decent enough speed to stop you throwing up all over your shiny new toy.

    • I think there is a VR device coming out, possibly in kickstarter atm, which will allow you to view any existing movies/games in VR – but to what extent i’m not certain, probably with variable results.
I’ve also seen some chat elsewhere about virtual cinemas, where you watch a movie on a giant screen inside a virtual theatre and you can be joined by the avatars of your friends.. Come to think of it that reminds me of Playstation Home.. a VR version of something like that could be interesting.

I will want to get the most out of any VR kit that i might purchase, so movie viewing would be a welcome feature for me too. I think Sony will probably enable it but possibly only for their own digital content, which won’t really suit me. I’ll be watching closely for the details when PSVR launches and if it’s too limited in scope i will turn my attention to the Rift.

  8. £250 or it will bomb. After that underrated great piece of kit vita, no one trust Sony, if not enough people buy it, they will just abandon it like it never existed

    • Sadly true. It looks to be the PS move and Kinect era all over again, and we know how that ended. Nevertheless I reckon VR is here to stick around, even if it’s just for the elite.

    • I don’t think it will bomb at £350. Like the oculus they’re not looking for a mass market. There are 30million PS4s in the world, there will be plenty of people who are

      A) Keen to get in on the ground floor of the tech

      B) Have financial limitations preventing them buying oculus and a monster.

I would give my left nut to have one day one but alas I shall have to save. (already got the camera and move controllers… Recommended anyone interested in PSVR buy theirs now while their cheap…you be paying a premium if you get them with the headset)

I think we’ll also see a more basic PS4 (a slim) that will be bundled with PSVR for the same price as the oculus.

    • No way it will be £250. £400 is pushing it, £350 will be fine for launch.

  9. Find it quite funny that the Swiss leak this. And the product details sound odd to me, as it says ‘thanks to 3D audio technology you hear details on you, below you and next to you’…

    • Just like in real life then, with spacial awareness. If you are positioned in a 3D world you want to have the audio relate correctly – I agree it is hardly the first thing you would describe. It would surely be the view, especially when Audio is an extra cost if you haven’t got headphones and don’t want to listen to it through the duplicate ‘view’ on the tv from the box of tricks.

      • Sorry, I’ve not made clear what is odd here in the German version. The sound is not the first thing they describe. But it states you hear what is ‘on top of you’, which seems strange to me.

    • You’ll be able to hear what is on top of you..? ..VR pron confirmed! ;)

In answer to 94jdh though, i don’t think audio through the tv/monitor will be a viable choice because, in some virtual environments at least, the audio might serve to provide orientation/navigation clues for the player.

      • In response to TSBonyman:

Sorry I wasnt that clear either! In the my first comment I was explaining why I would think you would need the 3d sound. Obviously this is necessary for the full experience of VR. I was trying to point out why the Audio is singled out , considering it isn’t included by default.

      • Ah yes, i understand the point you wee making, thanks for the clarification.

      • “r” … insert where appropriate.. :/

  10. How about… $599!

That price is an historically successful price for PlayStation products

    • Sony would want to be nuts to pull that price out of the bag!
