Sony Steps In To Get The Banner Saga On Vita

Despite having made the leap to home consoles earlier this month, a Vita version of The Banner Saga was left floundering in development limbo. With its PS4 and Xbox One counterparts originally slated for release in early 2015, this handheld edition was expected to launch soon after.

However, with Stoic’s porting partner having gone bankrupt, the developer hit a significant bump in the road. Aside from being left unfinished, the code for these ports proved tricky to make sense of. Despite this major set-back, Stoic managed to source another studio, eventually bringing The Banner Saga to current-gen platforms.

Without the financial backing or manpower of a AAA studio, it’s easy to see why Stoic may have shied away from a subsequent Vita release. This umming and ahhing culminated in a Twitter poll from the developer last December, asking PlayStation fans if they would buy a Vita copy of their game.

Even with a 69% yes vote, there was still no clarification whether or not the project would go forward. Since then, however, Stoic has seemingly come to an agreement with PlayStation, having recently entered a partnership to bring The Banner Saga to Vita.

Stating that the Vita continues to enjoy a passionate player base, Corsi also emphasised how excited developers are to work with the platform. Of course, when securing these third party relationships, there is bound to be an exchange of money. Although not entirely transparent, we’d hesitate to brand this as a shady ploy on Sony’s behalf. Similar deals have been struck before, helping to prop up games such as the western release of Yakuza 5 as well as the upcoming Shenmue 3.
