2K have had some big hits in the past, not least their very popular yearly NBA games and the critically acclaimed BioShock, but all that have gone before have been quite comprehensively outdone by Mafia III’s launch. Take Two have reported a new record high first week sales for a 2K game of 4.5 million copies.
That’s pretty damned impressive and shows that the various gambles the publisher made during development paid off, from creating a brand new studio for the project through to featuring a black man as its protagonist in the turbulent cultural atmosphere of the late 1960s.
That said, it can’t really be considered a critical success, with more middling reviews. Our own review concluded, “Mafia III is a game with a great plot, great characters, and great setting, but it’s hamstrung by the repetitive nature of its mission structure.”

Mafia 3 and Uncharted 4 have been my favourite games of 2016.
