Yooka-Laylee Is Releasing On 11th April, New Location Revealed

If you’ve got a hankering for old school platformers, the Yooka-Laylee looks like it will be right up your alley, with its chameleon and bat character combo, bright colourful environments and a team with plenty of former Rare developers. The game’s release date on PC, PS4 and Xbox One has just been announced as 11th April 2017.

The game’s now open for pre-orders on those three platforms, with a price of £34.99 / $39.99 / €39.99. Should you pre-order, then you can now gain access to the Yooka-Laylee Toybox demo. This was previously only available on PC and for Kickstarter backers, but is now coming to console and gives a small taste of how the game will play.

You’ll only have a rather basic environment to explore in the Toybox, but Playtonic have finally revealed a new location within the game. Capital Cashino shows that it’s not just Sonic that can do casino levels.

Last but not least, while it’s currently only confirmed for PS4, XBO and PC, Playtonic Studio Director, Gavin Price, had an update for those wanting to play on a Nintendo console:

We’re sad to announce that despite our best efforts and exploring every possible avenue, we have encountered unforseen technical issues that unfortunately mean it will be impossible for us to release Yooka-Laylee on Wii U as initially planned.

We can however confirm today that we are working very closely with Nintendo to look to bring Yooka-Laylee to the upcoming Nintendo Switch™. We’re thrilled to be able to explore the opportunity and more details will be shared in early 2017. Of course, any backers who pledged for the Wii U version will be able to move their pledge to any of the versions launching on April 11th or upgrade to the Nintendo Switch™ version when we announce further details in 2017. Thanks again for your incredible support.”

  1. It’s sad to see the Wii U version cancelled, considering the large amount of Wii U backers. But hopefully most of them will be alright with waiting for the Switch version, or getting it on another platform.

For the developers, it’s good that they don’t need to spread their work across as many platforms. But I thought the Wii U was the lead platform?

I wouldn’t mind switching from Xbone to Switch myself though…
