Often thought of as something of an Overwatch copycat, Paladins developers Hi-Rez get to throw a bit of shade back at Blizzard for once, with President Stewart Chisam taking to Twitter to call out some apparent similarities between Overwatch’s 27th hero Brigitte, and Paladins’ own Ash.

Quick poll: If I happened to notice and point out any similarities between these two characters, would that make me the Pot calling the Kettle black, or the Kettle calling the Pot black? This will keep me up tonight unless I get a clear answer. pic.twitter.com/rt9j3NT0S0

Both are rather knightly looking with a chunky fantasy style to Ash’s armour and a similar build to the more futuristic looking Brigitte. Arguably, there’s nothing to that side of the comparison, because there’s really only so many ways that you can armour someone up in a pretty chunky fantasy style, and Blizzard have done plenty of that through the years of Warcraft, Diablo and even Starcraft. There’s more direct parallels between her armour’s look and that of Reinhardt, the character for whom she has canonically been the armourer and squire.
However, you can more justifiably get your cork board, newspaper clippings and red string out for the character abilities that Ash and Brigitte have. While they have different main weapons – Ash a big cannon and Brigitte a whip – they both have a deployable shield that they can place, a shoulder charge move, and the ability to fortify nearby allies with armour or health. Then again… these abilities do fit thematically with a support character that takes certain aspects from shield-toting tank Reinhardt.
I doubt we’ll be seeing any lawsuits.

This is a very clear case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Paladins ripped off pretty much everything Overwatch has to offer.

Wasn’t it more of a coincidence? Both being developed at the same time, both with similar features, but Overwatch beat Paladins to release?
Presumably now Blizzard will release a statement saying “We’re not blatantly copying Paladins, it’s just coincidence. We were planning on making it look so similar for ages. Possibly something involving a time machine. We can probably afford one of those”

Aren’t you thinking of Battleborn?

No, definitely Paladins. One of the developers had quite a bit to say about it last year on Reddit.
At best, all the similarities are a coincidence. At worst, Overwatch copied ideas from their earlier games.
I’d say more of the first option there, but this latest one makes me wonder.
