Civilization VI Won’t Have Online Multiplayer On Switch

Perhaps showing its roots from the iPad version of the game, Civilization 6 for Nintendo Switch won’t have support for online multiplayer, only local.

Having been spotted by Reddit user WinneonSword, the store page on Switch only highlights “Local Wireless” multiplayer for 1-4 people, and the Nintendo UK page similarly states that it includes “exclusive four-player local multiplayer.”

Reaching out to 2K, Eurogamer got the following response:

Civilization VI for Nintendo Switch includes support for local cooperative and competitive multiplayer for up to four players via a Wireless Network. It will not have online multiplayer.

It’s parity with the iPad version of the game, which is also limited to only local multiplayer, but it’s still a damn shame, especially when considering that features like play by email have featured in previous entries in the series, enabling players to break up long play sessions in a more bite-sized manner ideal for the handheld.

  1. Damn that sucks. OK, this isn’t a game I would play online very often but the option to do so would have been nice.

  2. I can’t wait for this. It’s the perfect game to be playing on my long haul flights in April. Might need to buy a power bank for it though!

  3. The feature most notably missing from the game is ps4 support.

  4. I’d love a proper Civ game on the PS4 but at least we have Tropico which is better IMO.
