Mark Cerny to give “deep dive” into PS5 system architecture tomorrow afternoon, streaming planned GDC presentation

Sony are set to give us a “deep dive” into the PlayStation 5’s system architecture tomorrow, with lead system architect Mark Cerny revealing more about the console and how it will shape next gen games at 4PM GMT / 5PM CET / 9AM PST.

The last official details of the console came (outside of the logo) came last year with the second exclusive interview with Wired. Sony have already discussed the underlying technology, with AMD’s latest CPU and GPU architectures, ray tracing, an ultra-fast SSD, haptic triggers, backward compatibility and more already confirmed.

At this point we’d expect Cerny to be able to talk about the specifics of the hardware, such as the amount of RAM, the CPU and GPU clock speeds, and so on. After all, this tech reveal is coming hot on the heels of Microsoft’s own tech reveal for the Xbox Series X. That confirmed the previous rumours about the speed of the CPU – up to 3.8Ghz on the custom Zen 2 CPU – size and power fo the GPU – 12TFLOPS delivered by 52 RDNA 2 compute units – the 16GB of GDDR6 RAM, and revealed the size of the SSD at 1TB and a new option for expanding the internal storage, now that cheap, off-the-shelf HDDs are no longer considered speedy enough.

What’s interesting is that this wasn’t actually going to be PlayStation Meeting material. PlayStation Japan have actually confirmed that this was going to be their planned GDC presentation. Will that dilute what they’re going to announce? Or was Sony intending to reveal the detailed system specs at GDC already?

Either way, it’s going to be fascinating to see how Sony’s PlayStation 5 can compete in terms of specs with the Xbox Series X. Various leaks have suggested that it will be a step down in power, and Series X specs found in those leaks have been confirmed. Then again, maybe they won’t want to compete? Rumours are that the manufacturing cost of the PS5 is $450, so it’s anyone’s guess how much the Series X might cost.

While the PlayStation 5 is set to be released this year in time for Christmas, the widespread effects of coronavirus could very well affect the launch plans for next-gen. There were rumours that Sony would hold a PlayStation Meeting to reveal the console, but it seems that those plans have been quietly put to one side with international travel bans and large scale events and groups discouraged if not prohibited. Both Sony and Microsoft have been cautious and were among the earliest to back out of public events like GDC (where tomorrow’s info was planned to come out) and PAX East.

  1. If they’re doing this 2 days after MS announce all the numbers, it’s going to be either at least as powerful as the Series X, or some of the numbers will be better, some will be worse and the end result will be a negligible difference in how powerful it is.

MS seem to have settled on that “12 TFLOPS” number as their main point. I’m guessing Sony mention those at all. My predictions are…

    1. They’ll say it’s almost 3 times as powerful as the Pro.
    2. They’ll say they’re trying to make it affordable while not actually naming a price yet.
    3. Backwards compatibility gets mentioned for PS4 and PSVR, although further surprises would be nice.
    4. All the other numbers will be there but they’ll just ignore those, unless it’s a number that is a lot higher than the Series X.

Also it’s Mark Cerny, so I’ll be confused by not knowing if he’s just trying to put everyone to sleep or if it’s some sort of hypnotic seduction thing. 5 minutes listening to him, and I’m never sure if I want to have a nice nap or have sex with someone.

  2. Yippee!!!
MS blinked first, now it’s time for Sony to wow the world.

    • Maybe. Microsoft’s reveal was exactly in line with the leak that came out a couple months ago, and that same leak added credence to previous rumours about the PS5 hardware being a step down on what’s in the PS5. I expect Sony will be less powerful, but tout evolved upscaling techniques from the PS4 Pro to get close enough to 4K60. We’ll see, though.

  3. There’s been so many leaks and rumours going round I’ve given up reading them. I’m glad we’re getting the facts tomorrow.

  4. The recent XBox reveal was boring as he’ll, it was basically just ‘hey, it a little more powerful than the current XBox’… Oh my..! Who would have thought that..!
Was there anything with an appeal to the mass market, or which was worth a snappy headline in some of the Corona-flooded media? Nope.

And those videos were even worse! Showing off how bad loading times of the current XBox are. Reminded me of the initial presentation of the PS4 dashboard, how quickly you could get into the store, to games, etc., at times when the PS3 got really bad. Nothing new there either. And look at the PS4 today, it got quite slow too.

The best reveal by MS this far was the design of the console itself, that looks good, the rest was just meh.
Let’s see whether Sony can do any better.
