DC Universe Online PS5 release coming later this year

Oh, how time flies. It seems like only yesterday that we originally reviewed DC Universe Online on PS3 and now I’ve been hit with the sudden realisation that the superhero MMO has just turned 10 years old. And it’s still going strong, recent figures revealing a current average of more than 400k monthly active users with around 40K paying subscribers.

Looking to futureproof their comic inspired action MMORPG, Daybreak Game Company (formerly Sony Online Entertainment) have announced that a PlayStation 5 version is currently in the works and is expected to launch sometime in 2021.

Here’s what DC Universe Online senior producer, Landon Falls, said in their 10th anniversary letter about the PS5 port:

Later in the year we will have our official PlayStation 5 native client launched, with a set of changes focused on how to make DCUO look and play best on that new platform. Additionally, we will be looking into how to further bring graphical improvements to the game to keep pace with modern hardware. While the options are many and details few right now, we expect to make a combination of art and engine improvements to really make the game shine.

That will bring the number of active platforms for DC Universe Online up to five including PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. You can read our impressions of the Switch version here.

Of course, Daybreak will continue to support DCUO with fresh content and updates. Episode 40 is currently their main focus which is reportedly inspired by DC’s Flashpoint while promising a more traditional style of expansion compared to recent Episodes.

To coincide with the 10th anniversary celebrations, Daybreak released an infographic highlighting some interesting stats. So far more than 69 million heroes and villains have been created, totalling more than 700 million hours of playtime with a 66/34 split between heroes/villains, Superman being the most popular mentor.

Anyone who has access to the game can log in to claim a cluster of freebies including a CR290 character advance as well as the Paradox Gazer combat pet, two new celebratory fireworks trinkets, and two new 10th anniversary emblems. Meanwhile paying members will be awarded additional bonuses.
