Three locations from Starfield revealed with behind-the-scenes commentary

Following on from Starfielld’s in-engine cinematic reveal at E3 2021, Bethesda has shared some more details about the game’s interstellar setting, three of the locations from the game and the different factions that call them their home.

The three videos feature animated concept art and voice over from Design Director Emil Pagliarulo to give us insight into each.

The first focusses on New Atlantis, the capital of the United Colonies, which is the most powerful and well established military force in the game. The city (and the starport that is pictured) is a melting pot of different races, ethnicities and cultures.

Akila is then the capital of the Freestar Collective, and immediately has a very different tone. If New Atlantis is akin to Star Wars’ Coruscant, then Akila looks much more like Tatooine. The Freestar Collective is a confederation of three different star systems, with a firm belief in the sanctity of personal freedom and individuality. I’m sure red caps are very popular around those parts…

Akila city is walled, with the lands outside its protection home to the Ashta, alien creatures that are like a wolf mixed with a velociraptor.

And finally, there’s the pleasure city of Neon. It started as a fishing platform built by the Xenofresh Corporation, but their fishing plans changed when they discovered a fish with psychotropic properties and switched to selling drugs instead of fish. The drug Aurora is only legal on Neon, though, with people coming to the city specifically to get high.

As is often the case with science fiction, Bethesda are painting in some rather broad strokes with some of their world building here – Neon could almost be called New Amsterdam, if some US settlers hadn’t already tried that a few hundred years ago – but that simply provides a prepared canvas on which the rest of the story can be told.

Starfield is still over one year away from release, but Bethesda chose to set a date well in advance. With the studio now a part of Microsoft, Starfield will be coming exclusively to Xbox Series X|S and PC on 11th November 2022.

  1. Well, at least we know now what the game looked like when they conceived it.
