The PlayStation 5 launched without game folders, a feature found on PlayStation 4 and one that was used by a great many people. The reason for the lack of folders has now been revealed by a former Sony manager. Steven Trombetta took to Twitter to explain why the feature was missing, and it’s a very good reason.
Replying to a rather entitled headline from Kotaku, he wrote “We built this console in the middle of a global pandemic without requiring crunch from anyone. Some things had to go to make that a reality. It’d be nice if you weren’t rude about it. Employee health was the priority and I’m glad it was.”
Sony rolled out folders for PS5 just a few days as part of a firmware upgrade, but chose to call the feature “Gamelists”.
- Gamelists
- In your Game Library you can now create gamelists, which make organizing your games even easier.
- To start, go to the [Your Collection] tab and select [Create Gamelist]. Choose games to add to your gamelist, then decide what to name it.
- You can have up to 15 gamelists and 100 games per gamelist. All games under the “Your Collection” tab of your Game Library can be added to a gamelist, including disc, digital and streaming titles.*** You can also add the same game to multiple gamelists.

The firmware update also included new social features, easier access to In-progress Activities and 1440p HDMI video output, assuming you have a television or monitor than can support that output.

While I appreciate having some form of game folders now, it’s not as useful as the PS4 version. Having to go over to the collection tab and not having them on the home screen isn’t ideal. Perhaps it’s step 1 in that happening.

This is completely irrelevant now, we’re almost two years after launch now, and they still utterly failed to implement any half decent UI for their primary console. Those gameslists are just annoying, nothing more. I doubt Sony has anyone at all being responsible for UX, or their management doesn’t listen to them and messes everything up.

The gamelists themselves are fine. It’s getting them populated with your games that is a bit crap.
So they’ve actually made a half-decent UI. But a fully decent one would have been better.
