What We Played #569 – Splatoon 3, Deathloop & Steelrising

Splatoon 3 Header

Another week down, and Friday is even more welcome than in previous weeks after a few days of a visit from that pesky virus (it’s mean, you don’t want to mess with it). In the meantime, I’ve been playing ORX, Horizon Zero Dawn, Splatoon 3, and Farthest Frontier, all of which has been very nice indeed.

Gareth’s played through three sections of Valhalla. He tells us, “It’s still buggy, fiddly, not assassin-y (seriously, they’re barely in the game), stupid kill animations that take far too long and break the flow of combat, and all the side content takes 1-2 minutes each and is terrible, but I’m just barely hanging on to see wtf is going on with Sigurd despite the 1 minute of that story I’m getting per 5 hours of gameplay I’m stuck with at the moment.” He continued, “I also subscribed to Game Pass PC, realised it didn’t include streaming rendering it basically useless to me without a graphics card, tried Fallout 2, then gave up. It was only £1, it’s fine.”

Tuffcub played D… D…. D…. Deathloop! Aha! After the surprise he told us, “It looks great, sounds great, love the acting, it’s very Bioshocky, and… I really have no inclination to play anymore of it, I think it is, again down to the character being fast and smooth when moving about, he has no weight. I don’t move like that so it just doesn’t feel right. I need Killzone or God fo War heft, or my tanky Titan in Destiny 2. Which I also played. Obvs. Weirdly I didn’t not have the same problem with The Pathless, which I also played, but perhaps because that character clearly isn’t a human male.”

Aran finished Horizon Forbidden West and got the Platinum for it. After all that time he said, “What a really good game, with an excellent world to explore, and cracking story.”

Nic B didn’t get a chance to play more Yu-Gi-Oh, because he’s been playing the new Monkey Island game. He’s also been to EGX and played some fun stuff, including Rhythm Towers, a rhythm-based tower defence game, and a bunch of VR games, “which was fun”.

Nick P finished Cult of the Lamb “which was superb!” He also started Steelrising which “has been alright so far. It’s basically Bloodborne in Paris, but not as good”. He also jumped back on Overwatch, as well as playing Fortnite and DBD. Meanwhile, Ade has been playing the Survival mode on Streets of Rage 4. He says, It’s so very good!”

Serial Cleaners Sitcom

Finally, Teflon played Serial Cleaners, “which was enjoyable with its 90s crime drama and retro vibes, but had some clear limits to its stealth action”.

What about you? What have you played?

  1. Still playing the same as last week, mostly. Except I got the Platinum for Grid Legends. Which is a stupid long grind at the end. Drive 50 miles in a dozen different cars and complete a single race in each of 100 cars.

Oh, and a couple of the PS+ Extra/Premium games. Chicory is a bit shit. And only has the PS4 version with PS+. They even put a special PS+ version on the store that doesn’t have the PS5 version.

Spiritfarer, on the other hand, was a nice surprise. Once again, one of those little indie games perfectly suited for PS+.

And Deathloop. Which is an interesting idea. May get annoying going through the same places over and over. And the main characters definitely get annoying very quickly. I’ll keep at it for a bit though.

  2. My week started with watching the Royal funeral, which was actually quite emotional, so the week could only really get better from there!
I played more Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, working my way through the story so I can get the collectibles and start on the DLC.
I also started Dead or Alive 5 on PS3 which may take a while for the multiplayer trophies – 1000 online matches is not going to be quick, but I’ll keep chipping away at it!
I also began Lego Hobbit on Vita, which is ok, if a bit confusing initially – the game doesn’t tell you half the things that you need to know in relation to gameplay.

  3. First, I finished Red Matter on PSVR, which I quite liked towards the end, it’s one of the better PSVR games, and it’s not overly long either, which is a good thing. That was an easy platinum.

As I was in the mood for relaxing games this week, I continued Telltale’s Batman: Enemy within, which is not as good as their previous Batman game, but it’s ok (and it’ll be another easy platinum, even if I don’t play for trophies at all, actually).

  4. A weekend away for my partner’s brother’s birthday, and then a trip to the theatre for some comedy (the wonderful Dave Gorman) meant no gaming at the weekend. And then Monday? They’re building a new Aldi near me and managed to dig up an important cable. Meaning no internet for me (and several thousand others) for about 32 hours. Top marks to Openreach for getting it fixed that quickly in a small town.

It does demonstrate how badly the PS5 handles not being online. Everything tries to do something that needs a connection. Even looking at the trophies for a game? Takes ages and eventually realises. I was going to do more of Deathloop, but that gets upset and spends 30 seconds trying to connect before telling you it can’t, but you can still play offline. And it does that every time you die. Which is frequently.

Still, it was all fixed in the end. So back to what I was playing last week. Plus the free update for the lovely PS+ game Toem.

Oh, and because I’m still downloading all of the New PS+ games, The MISSING: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories. Which is odd. But then Swery65. So what was I expecting? Oh yes. Odd and some interesting but ever so slightly badly implemented gameplay. How did I miss out on that one?

And because it’s free to play, Deathverse: Let it Die. Technically a Battle Royale thing, I guess. But with only 16 players. And melee combat only (mostly). Current gen only, so that helps. No waiting around for PS4 players to load. Quite fun. Quite short games, as it encourages you to rush in and start killing people (you get more powerful with each kill, so a sort of snowball effect there). Played about 30 odd games and came first 3 times. Which I’m going to insist is good, because it’s better than completely randomly winning 1 in 16 games. No obnoxious play to win stuff either, or pestering you to pay. Just occasionally when you level up the battle pass (or whatever it’s called) it pops up a “have a look at what you could have won” screen at the end of a game. And nice quick matchmaking, at least so far. Worth a look.

Oh, and the PS5 version of Tropico 6 was on sale, so there goes another many, many hours.
