Sony has announced that their first pro controller, the DualSense Edge for PS5, will release on 26th January 2023 directly from Sony, and 23rd February from other retailers. They’ve also confirmed that it will cost $199.99 USD/¥29,980 (including tax)/€239.99/£209.99.

The DualSense Edge is Sony’s first step into the popular niche of pro gamepads, taking the PS5’s DualSense design and enhancing it with a number of additional features to refine the gaming experience to your desires. That includes a pair of rear button paddles, which can be programmed to duplicate other button presses so you can keep your thumbs on the sticks during the action, adjustable analogue trigger shortstops and dead zones.

There’s also swappable analogue stick caps (including some old DualShock 3-style domes), and the entire stick module can be replaced – these will be sold separately for $19.99 USD/¥2,680 (including tax)/€24.99/£19.99. The stick modules also include an additional modifier latch on the front that allows you to quickly switch between custom profiles and adjust audio volume and balance.

It comes with an included USB cable with a connector locking housing to ensure it remains secured when in wired mode – it can be used wirelessly – and there’s a natty looking carry case to keep it protected when you’re off on your travels.

Here’s the full package of contents:

  • DualSense Edge wireless controller
  • USB braided cable
  • 2 Standard caps
  • 2 High dome caps
  • 2 Low dome caps
  • 2 Half dome back buttons
  • 2 Lever back buttons
  • Connector housing
  • Carrying case

Even so, $200 and £210 feels like a high sum to pay. Though typically limited to wired-only play, there’s plenty of other pro controllers that come in at £150, such as Thrustmaster’s Eswap Pro, and Microsoft’s Elite Series 2 controller costs £160 pricing with all the included accessories, or £115 without. That said, there does seem to be an upward trend in this area, as Scuf’s customised DualSense controllers start at £200, and that’s without accessories.

So, does the DualSense Edge tickle your fancy, or is it just too damned expensive?
