4A Games has pinpointed the release date for Metro 2039, the post-apocalyptic FPS now set to launch on 4th February 2027. The studio also shared a first look at the game running on PS5 Pro and confirmed a lovely 60fps frame rate target.
The gameplay trailer was captured entirely on PS5 Pro, showing the game at its very best on console with 4K, 60FPS and ray-traced visuals combining. It’s not just the top tier console, though. In the press release, 4A states that “At launch, a Performance Mode with 4K, 60FPS and ray tracing will be available across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X consoles.”
Look out for details on the technical specs and graphics modes in future, but I’m hoping that’s exactly what they mean.
Then again, 4A Games has a track record for pushing graphical boundaries. The original games in the series looked fantastic for their time, but the studio was incredibly ambitious with Metro Exodus in 2019, pushing the engine at the forefront of ray traced lighting effects. While it originally launched for the last generation, a new generation upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X was then able to bring a further improved suite of ray tracing to all platforms.
As for the setting, the game is now taking place in 2039, so we’re a few years on from the previous titles – the original was in 2033, of course, with Metro Exodus set in 2035. Returning to the tunnels of the Moscow Metro system, the factions have now been united under the Novoreich and a new Fuhrer – the legendary Spartan, Hunter. It’s an authoritarian regime, filled with propaganda, misinformation and indoctrination. Stepping into this is The Stranger, a fully voiced lead protagonist who is returning to the Metro after swearing never to go back. In addition to the mutated horrors and human foes, he’s haunted by waking nightmares.
