Back in July we had the first news that Motorstorm: Apocalypse would have some sort of race creation feature and now a few more details have emerged. Evolution Studio’s Paul Rutschynsky has revealed that the races that arrive on the disc will be created using a toolkit that ships with the game, which in turn you can use to create your own races.
“We’re shipping basically the same tools we used to make those game modes on the disc,” said Rutschynsky, “So the player will be able to string together a series of actions to create a consequence to string together rules to basically create and then share their own game modes online.”
“If you don’t want it to be who comes first, you can change those rules so it’s like a points scoring system that you’ve devised, or rules where any vehicle come into contact with another vehicle, they both explode. You can do whatever you want. We’ll promote the best [modes] on the official matchmaker so everyone gets a chance to play these new game modes.”
Any races created can be shared via the PSN but Evolution are keen to stress the editor does not go as far as creating your own tracks,
“It’s taking cues from LittleBigPlanet; it’s not extended where you can build entire levels, but where you can set your own rules up.”
Motorstorm: Apocalypse is out next year (despite Play.com having it listed for for 5th November 2010!) To pass the rather long wait, why not check out this footage. It looks like a playable version of the race to the airport from the film 2012.
I just have one question: If the world is ending and buildings are crashing around your ears, is this really the best time to call up your mates? “I say chaps, apocalypse and all that – last one to the crumbling office block is a big nancy! Tally ho!”

tonycawley
Haha. You’re right, if the world was ending i’d be hunting down kelly brook for a bit of last minute fun, not having a race. Never mind though hey? Each to their own and all that.
FLUFFYB1TCH
I’m going to pretend we’re all racing to get to kelly brook’s place. Winner takes all
Apnomis
Technically the world isn’t ending though, despite the name of the game. As far as I understood it a massive earthquake has hit the city and it has been evacuated. You race around the wreckage of the city and watch out for aftershocks that continue to bring down unstable buildings. The city is populated by crazy looters and private military contractors that have been employed by the rich residents to look after what remains of their property until the city is declared safe…
Phil_E
Tally Ho! indeed. looks good
Bilbo_bobbins
I don’t understand this, they are saying you can create your own races but not your own tracks? This is normal for most games isn’t it?
bunimomike
Sounds like it. They’ve given you the ability to choose game-type (maybe set paths/routes (?)) but not actually build it yourself. To be fair, if it’s a blindingly good game this would be a welcome addition. If not, I wish devs would stop wasting their time with the “create” part of the LBP mantr and concentrate on something we actually want to “play”! :-)

The parameters for the race are adjustable, unlike other race gams – as the article says you coud set the race so that of you touch another player you explode.
Bilbo_bobbins
yeah I see what you are both saying, but I don’t know, seems like it’s not that much of a major addition. I can see it’s new and looks great in the trailer, I just don’t think it’s a major addition or anything, although welcomed like bunimomike says.
bunimomike
“you could set the race so that if you touch another player you explode.”
Like premature ejaculation?
Sorry. Mind is in the gutter early today.

@bilbo
Yeah I thought it was like any other racer. Where you just choose the number of vehicles, type of vehicles, the race mode, collision on or off etc. etc. Not sure what super-special design tools are needed for that, when most other games manage perfectly well with a menu
Apnomis
I think the special bit is that you get access to all options. In racers the selection is quite limited like number of cars, number of laps etc.
I’ve not seen a car game that let’s you setup a race where the person in 2nd wins, or the person in last place of each lap is eliminated, or if you crash you do not respawn, or if you touch another player you explode, or you can only race in reverse, or the world has low gravity, or you play racing tag where you get points for touching the highlighted car, or cat and mouse for 2 players where the 1st racer gets a 10 second headstart and the 2nd needs to catch him, or if you get more than 2 seconds air time you’re eliminated, or the first person to get 10 seconds air time wins, or you have no boost, or you have unlimited boost etc etc…
Obviously I’m making these up and you might not be able to do some of these things, but I think you get the idea of what they mean by a create mode vs a customisation menu…
cc_star
Oh yeah, realise all that, but talk of including design tools seems a bit of a red herring to me
“I’ve not seen a car game that let’s you setup a race where the person in 2nd wins, or the person in last place of each lap is eliminated…”
That’s just the same as selecting a game mode, so you select race, elimination, or highest points wins etc. Something thats in all genres of games including many racers.
There are some racers where you can turn collision on or off, obviously not all of the vehicles blow up in other games but that more because it wouldn’t fit with the game style
and so on and so on
Seems more like an enhanced menu (that is perhaps more prevalent in most (all) FPS, or games like Uncharted2, Warhawk etc than in console based racers) than the tools the designers used to create the game to me.
Yeah, I agree with what you say but to me it sounds like they’re overstating it by a wide margin.
Anyway, all anyone really wants is for the game to be as playable as Motorstorm, without the weird unexplainable brokenness of Pacific Rift.
Bilbo_bobbins
cc thats what I was trying to say, thanks lol
hazelam
so can we recreate the best bit of 2012?
are there any stretch limos in the games?
cc_star
The best bit of 2012 is when the end credits start to roll
yogdog
I did’nt see it, that bad?
bunimomike
Ooo, I’d quite like to run-down John Cusack lap after lap after lap. Count me in!
cc_star
@yogdog
No, not really… its actually much worse.
yogdog
Lol, I’ll make a point to avoid at all costs for movie nights then :)
ScottW-1976
Some passable VFX but dreadfull film overall, avoid…
cam the man
Looks like it’s another great addition to the Motorstorm franchise. Glad it’s out next year, too many good racing games are coming to market in the next few months.
Stitch
Yeah! That’s some great looking footage, with split-screen, customisation and a good storyline this is certainly going to be one to watch.
solidsteven
this will make the meet interesting and will be fun. i want this game =D
Charmed_Fanatic
yeah the rules that you can set sounds cool
Jumping Monks
This should be cool. As long as it’s something similar to what Apnomis has said, it should be good. I do think that they seem to be describing something that isn’t ‘all that’.
Ricknederland
Blowing up buildings etc looks very much like Split Second Velocity.
Origami Killer
loving the look of this game. it looks like there is quite a lot of multiple routes in the game so there is probably gonna be a lot of vareity, and i like the sound of your own game mode, would be evry fun to share them online. however, i have only played the demo of split second and they look simialr vut hey its motorstorm! :D
aerobes
Sounds interesting. I’ll definitely be trying this out.
