Sony Online Entertainment has announced that DC Universe Online will be delayed until early 2011, rather than coming out this November. John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment, had the following to say:
“SOE is dedicated to delivering the highest quality game experiences possible. DC Universe Online is the first game of its kind, and a truly massive undertaking — the first action MMO set in the DC Universe, the first MMO on the PlayStation 3, and the first time the entire DC Universe will be accessible to the millions of fans who are eagerly anticipating its release. As the game heads into external beta testing, this extra time will allow us to address community feedback in a meaningful way. When we get deeper into external beta, we’ll be able to share more information regarding the new launch date.”
The PS3 ‘Collector’s Edition’ of the game has also been announced for North America – it contains the DCUO Batman statue, the limited edition Art of DC Universe Online art book, the DCUO Legends Issue #0 comic book with a Jim Lee variant cover, the DCUO Prestige comic presentation of the DCUO back-story and the limited edition Jim Lee-drawn poster Version of the Legends Issue #0 comic book variant cover. Sounds nice, we hope Europe gets a similar deal.

I’m worried that this game isn’t going to be as good as I want it to be. I really want to love this, MMOs can be some of the best gaming experience in my opinion (I was hooked on City of Heroes for about 4 years).

Well, by them delaying it’s release, there’s a good chance it’ll be considerably better than it would’ve been had they not delayed it. I’m glad they’ve delayed it, it’s a game I’m interested in, and one that needs to be as good as possible. On top of that, I can’t afford to buy it right now, so this is good news all round as far as I’m concerned.

Yeah I agree, and in fact said much the same in the LBP delayed post. Development-wise, can only be a good thing for the game.

I know that you’ve probably been asked this loads of times, but is this game subscription free? I swear I’ve been looking for the answer for at least an hour now.

I seem to remember there will be a subscription model in place. But I also remember reading a very very long time ago that it may be possible that instead there will be a lot of different micro-transactions instead. Can’t remember for sure, but one way or the other it’ll end up costing more than just the price of the disc.

i was really looking forward to getting the game next month too.
if it means a better game i guess i can understand.
though by its very nature any problems with the game would still be fixable after launch, seems kinda late to announce months of delay to a title, just one month before the launch date.
seriously, i’m getting flashbacks to last year, a whole raft of games have their november release dates put back.
actually, i just realised, that might explain why mw2 sold so much, there was nothing else released with a month of the game.

as for the special edition in europe, i’m doubtful, the official site seems to confirm my doubts too.

they never revealed where we could get the preorder bonuses for the game in europe did they? they announced them in july.

and on the official site they only have preorder info for canada and the us, whoa, deja vu when i wrote “canada and the us”, which is weird because i know i’ve complained about this problem plenty of times before. :)
