Mass Effect 3 Officially Announced

What a surprise! BioWare have used the 2010 Spike Video Games Awards to announce Mass Effect 3 for a 2011 release.

The trailer shows a soldier hiding out in the battered remains of the Palace of Westminster clock tower, picking off enemies with a sniper rifle, before a quick zoom out shows us a London under attack from giant (and likely evil) aliens. Charming. “If Shephard doesn’t send help soon,” says our unidentified narrator, “there won’t be a world left to save.”

No platforms were announced in the trailer, and the GameTrailers page also lists the game with platforms “TBA” – wherever it arrives, however, Mass Effect 3 will be arriving “holiday 2011”.

  1. Having a Playstation, I’ve never played Mass Effect, but this looks amazing. Will I need to play the first two to understand the story or aren’t they of real necessity?

    • uhh good question do we need to play the first two?

      • Yeah you kinda do, but Mass effect 2 is coming to PS3 with content that will explain what happened in the first

      • Oh awesome, thanks. I have a close friend with the first one so I could play though that and then buy the second game when it’s out on Playstation.

      • I would definitely play the first two. A lot has happened and you would probably be lost.

      • Mass Effect 2 for PS3 will include a introductory mode, allowing players to witness the events of the first game. Just pick up ME2 in January and you will be set for ME3 ;)

      • I would say if you can play the first one do though, as you will be missing out if you reduce it to an interactive comic.

    • You will have to play at least second part. Depends how will they make that interactive comic part.
It is quite an interesting story, so you would miss a lot.
And also, there are many, many choices to be made in both games which have repercussions in followups.

    • I don’t know the answer to that question but why not pick up Mass Effect 2 in January, it comes with the background of ME1 so I assume ME3 will carry on from ME2 however it tends to be that all games can be played individually despite them being sequels. Asides from White Knight Chronicles though..

  2. pretty nice trailer i never played a mass effect game might give it a try!

  3. I cant wait :D mass effect 2 is in my top 5 games :P so high hopes for this one

  4. My fave trailer of the night.

  5. By the way, that wasn’t Simon Pegg doing the voice over, he said so on his twitter account @simonpegg

    • Yeah, the narrator was him I’m pretty sure but I don’t know if he has been a regular.

This series has always intrigued me but being a PS3 fan I’ve never had the chance. So when BioWare announce that they are making it multi-platform, my wee brother buys an Xbox :/ Good timing eh!

  6. I can’t get the video on my phone, was this the thing being teased by all the pics the last few days? The sniper bit sounds similar. If so I’m a bit disappointed, this was obviously coming I was hoping for a more surprising reveal!

  7. woah! never been interested in Mass Effect, might get 2 on the PS3 now and see what the fuss is about

  8. That’s it. I’m getting the PC Version of ME1 right now.

  9. sorry thought i was watching resistance FOM, alien invasion in london, im sure ive played that before

but saying that i will be getting ME2 on ps3 and probably this one

    • Mate you couldn’t be further off the mark. FOM and ME are like chalk and cheese!! If you’ve even debated whether to get and play the first two you’ve thought about it too long. I have a PS3 and an XBox and I would seriously just buy an XBox for the first one, you literally can’t miss out on it, its truly epic.

  10. Man, I love this franchise!

Bioware certainly know how to make a damn good sci-fi RPG.
