Sonic Turns 20 Today

Is there any videogame occurrence more memorable than the intro music to the original Sonic the Hedgehog? Released 20 years ago today, when he first graced our screens back in 1991 he was one cool character. Whilst Mario was a slightly awkward chubster, Sonic had presence, attitude, and the gall to actually tap his toes impatiently if you left him waiting for too long.

Despite losing a bit of his lustre with his 3D adventures, I think we can all agree that Sonic 1 to 3 (plus Sonic and Knuckles) were fine examples of how to do platforming games correctly. Happy Birthday, Sonic! Don’t forget the Sonic Generations demo will be live on the PSN today.

Oh, and it’s Dr. Robotnik. Eggman isn’t welcome here.

  2. Happy birthday SONIC wow 20 years I must have been 4 years old when playing SEGA – great memories. Can play Sonic on the PS3 to Celebrate!

    • Absolutely, Robotnik sounds way cooler than Eggman, I hate how they adopted that from Sonic adventures onwards!

      Oh and Sonic > Mario anyday. Just to keep that 20 year fanboyism going! *Runs*

      • …but Eggman is way better (I bought all the Sonic 3D games so I would know hahaha.)

      • How can you take some one seriously called Eggman? Robotnik is way more menecing. And the fact that you bought all the 3D games deminished your credibility, it does not further it, Adventure aside they were just awful.

      • Heroes and Shadow were decents games although the other games sadly hadn’t improved.

        Well he’s either called Robotnik or Eggman but its still the same villian. I like Eggman.

    • And he was called Robotnik in the original English version. Consistency is key.

    To this day Sonic Adventure 2 is still the greatest 3-D platformer ever. Sonic The Hedgehog could’ve been but it was rushed although it was still fun to play :(

    • I swear I think this almost every day… and then a new Mario Galaxy comes out and I shut up for a while :D

    • No… Sonic doesn’t deserve it they can take Tails instead by just painting him blue and adding spikes oh and any badly designed Sackboy costume.

  8. Although its not “proper” sonic, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is out on iOS today.

    • It was a big disappointment on consoles. At the right price though, it may be ok on iPhone.

    • Its okay but it got so boring after a few tournaments.
