Up until now, the Sonic movie series has been making the most of its releases in the first half of the year. The first Sonic the Hedgehog film broke records upon its debut in North America in February 2020, records which were then broken all over again with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in April 2022. Going for the Christmas release indicates that Paramount sees this as a franchise that can really capture the mainstream audience, with the holiday film release window often featuring major blockbuster films.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will follow on from the end credits scene from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that introduced the next big baddie that he will have to face – I won’t spoil it for you, but you can probably have a good guess. We’ll certainly see the bulk of the cast from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 returning, with Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carey as Dr. Robotnik in the leading roles. Alongside them, Colleen O’Shaughnessey lends her voice to Tails, having voiced the character in numerous games over the past decade, and Idris Elba was great as Knuckles.
We reviewed Sonic the Hedgehog 2 earlier this year, giving it a great 8/10 score and saying:
“Sonic the Hedgehog 2 kicks on from the 2020 origin story with a bigger and even more bombastic sequel, fleshing out the Sonic universe while riffing on superhero movies and globe-trotting adventures. With another film in the works (and a mid-credits scene to tease it), this blue blur is set to be a family-friendly staple for quite some time to come.”
