Sony’s PlayTV, the cool digital TV receiver and recorder (using the PS3’s hard drive) is due out next month in UK, France, Italy, Spain and Germany, and will be priced at the bargain price of £69.99.
The hardware has two tuners, so you can watch one station and record another, and you can even watch movies and play games whilst recording TV, so the missus has no room for complaint. With remote streaming of content to your PSP and freely movable recordings, this is something to look out for when it lands in September.
Thanks to Edgefusion in our forums for the tip.
Update: Eurogamer, fashionably late, have confirmed the date: 19th September.

Cool, that’s not a bad price. Anyone know if they have changed the design so the aerial has a ‘pass through’ or am i still gonna need an ugly splitter to feed my tv as well?

I think there’s still only one RF socket, sadly. A shame, as I need an output socket too to drive the other room’s box.

Far too expensive considering you are paying for two tuners which can be picked up in usb form for £15 the ps3 is doing the rest. Am sure it will be good quality but £70 is too much are you sure it wasn’t 70 euros?

Look on the site, it’s £69.99.
I think it’s great value – wait until you see the slick interface.

yeah granted you could buy a standalone (pc) tuner gizmo for less, but as nofi pointed out its has a lot to do with the very slick interface, HD compatible turner, plus the ability to stream any programs/films to yor PSP via any wi-fi hotspot…those alone are worth the asking price IMO…i’ll be getting it too!!

this looks fantastic and i think i’m going to get it. the only concern i have is how much memory say a 1 hour program will take up on the harddrive. i don’t want to spend another £70 on a harddrive just so i can use Playtv properly. can anyone give me a rough estimate on how much memory it will take up? thanks very much

er..i just read somewhere that apparently it no longer accepts HD signals, due a change in the licensing laws or whatever??? you news hounds here, fancy sniffing out the truth?

It won’t record HD signals on launch and apparently the saved recordings can’t be moved.

Sixthaxis how did you get it so wrong about the transfer of files to PSP, Don’t worry i think everyone Fanboy did.
Sony Talk to us.
Cancelled my order now, this was going to replace my Virgin + Box and i bet a lot of other peoples Box’s too.
Total PR disaster again from Sony!
Can TSA you find out why please, And don’t say “Sony never Did say we could Transfer Files to the PSP or other devices”, Because Someone did form the Software development and Sony did not retract that statement.
The only way I would buy a PLAY TV box now if they backtrack again! And have a firmware update and let us transfer files.

Now they say we cannot, make your minds up!
TSA, Did sony get back to you yet to say why?
