Updated story: We’ve now heard from Sony, so we can finally sort out who’s getting what, and when.  The essential information is the same as the stuff we brought you at 10am: Ghostbusters is to be published in PAL territories by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, on June 19th, and will be exclusive at that time.  This means for Europe and Australia owners of PS3 and PlayStation 2 you will get their hands on the game which will launch alongside the Blu-ray release of the original hit movie.

“We’re committed to bringing the PlayStation family the biggest and best gaming experiences first,” says Mark Hardy, European Product Marketing Director at SCEE, “and it doesn’t get any bigger and better than this blockbuster title. This summer, PlayStation owners will be the first to grab their proton packs and fight the spirit world. We’d like to wish them the best of luck in their ghostbusting endeavours and, of course, to remind them not to cross the streams!”

“With our colleagues at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe publishing Ghostbusters: The Video Game, we are thrilled by the dynamic new Ghostbusters game. We think it will have tremendous appeal to gamers and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this beloved franchise.” said Mark Caplan, Vice President of Licensing-Interactive for Sony Pictures Consumer Products Inc. “With this superb game launching alongside the Blu-ray release, we will reach existing fans and the next generation, bringing them all into the irresistible Ghostbusters universe.”

“Atari is committed to maximizing the launch of the Ghostbusters videogame across Europe,” Said Jim Wilson, VP Worldwide Marketing, Atari. “In partnership with both Sony Pictures Consumer Products, Inc and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, we have a unique opportunity to add new game products and expand marketing opportunities to reach Ghostbusters fans in Europe.”

As we originally said, Xbox 360, PC and Wii owners will still get the game later in the year.    The PSP version is scheduled for launch in autumn 2009.

  1. It will be nice to see a PS3/PS2 exclusive, but I’ve heard from a few sites/people that the Wii version is the most fun to play, so I’ve also been looking forward to this one as well as the PS3 version.

    • Oh god, the wiimote as a proton gun? I bet you’d feel oh so cool waving that about

  2. So I’m stealing DJHs PS3 on release day then.

    • Or you could buy your own? lol

      • I don’t have the shinies right now. I might do it after my birthday. Maybe. You know there’s other (more useful) stuff I want.

  3. As I said over on the forum, an interesting development indeed – I had no interest in this as an Atari game, but if it’s good enough that Sony want to publish it themselves then I might check it out.

I wonder if it will come out on 360 at all, as I have a friend who literally can’t wait for it and he doesn’t have a PS3 :D

  4. Yes!

At last, not sure how good the game will be especially after all the setbacks but it will be nice to play it first, for a change.

  5. Well that’s a turn up for the books. I hope Sony haven’t just bought a dud.

    • Personally, this makes me really quite hopeful – rarely do I not enjoy Sony-published games, so the fact they deem it good enough to get at least a timed exclusive interests me.

Depending on how it reviews, I think this might be at least a rental for me.

  6. Does that mean that another company will publish this game after if it is a timed exclusive?

    • Yes.

    • Atari.

    • It’s not even clear yet if it is a timed exclusive or Sony have bought the rights entirely, but if it does come to other consoles, Atari will publish unless they sell the rights to this on again.

I expect we’ll hear a proper press release soon from either Sony or Atari.

  7. About bloody time. One of my mates was going to buy a 360 just for Ghostbusters.. guess what he’s buying now :)

  8. Ok so I got six months at worst to wait for it turn up on my 360. I can live with that *twitch*

  9. Post updated with official word from Sony.

  10. About time it was the other way round! Woop!

  11. I can feel an evil laugh coming, wait for it….
    It’s still not here…

    • Fwahahahahahahaha!

      There it is.

  12. Sounds good, if its just SCEE when is the US etc gettin it? The sametime as us?

    • Yes, I assume the US are getting it at the same time, and that it’ll be out on the 360 in the US at the same time, not delayed due to this SCEE-only announcement.

      • Ah ok so it’s only a 360 exclusive in the SCEE territory?

  13. Surely some retailer will have to launch the collectors edition, to include the film blu-ray disc, and a Marshmallow Man keyring, all wrapped up neatly in a model Ecto1!

    • Yup. Then it gets given to you in a bucket of ectoplasm/slime! :-)

  14. awesome. thats all i have to say.

  15. Considering I’m not of the Ghostbusters generation, I havent really payed much attention to this game.

Not really sure how it’ll fair, being Atari and all, but here’s hoping its good :) Oh and nice to see Sony actually buying some exclusive rights (atleast timed exclusive in Europe if not anywhere else) and should send a nice middle finger to MS.

    :D
