Review: Ghostbusters The Video Game

Article written by nofi in PS3 News, on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 14:00.

As we suspected in our playtest last week, it’s now come to light that the PlayStation 3 version of Ghostbusters: The Video Game is running at 540p, and not only that, it’s just 960 pixels in width, according to GameZine. This then, would go some way to explain the vastly inferior textures on the PS3 version in comparison with those on the 360, as shown yesterday over at Lens Of Truth. The Xbox 360 version runs at 1280 by 720, almost twice the number of pixels.

This wouldn’t be such a big deal if Terminal Reality’s Mark Randel hadn’t hyped up the PS3 version so much when he spoke to VG247 last year.  “I want to show off our PS3 technology,” said Randel. “We’re one of the few developers who love the PS3 and have a great time with it. We have great technology for the PS3 and we want to show it off.”  We remember the quotes exactly as we ran a story on TSA with the same conversation.

“The PlayStation 3 has seven processors and the 360 only has three, so seven versus three means you can do a lot more on the PS3. We’re keeping the game the same over both platforms so we don’t want to take out any features.”  Yeah, well, it doesn’t appear that this has carried over to the full game – the PS3 is also missing a few visual effects, such as the burning embers left by the Proton Pack on the 360 version, and a graphically duller battle with Stay Puft.

  1. What.

    • yer what how hard can it be Just to boost u the graphics to at lest 720p
i expected beter from sony :(

      • Err what? This game has nothing to do with Sony, it’s the devs who didn’t put it in HD.

  2. Won’t affect sales though – their target audience of Ghostbusters fans will still buy it.

    • I disagree. I’m a ghostbusters fan, but this is an insult.
Yet another sub-standard game that’ll be 20€ more expensive than the 360 version.

  3. I find that shocking in this day and age that they can’t even run it at least 720p even though they talked it up a lot.

    • Ditto. The US version of GT4 which I imported played at 480p if you went via component connection to an HD telly. That was over 4 years ago!

  4. After reading this and the review I have gone cold completely on this game. Shame as I love Ghostbusters :(

    • Me too.

He lied and hurt my feelings….

      Venkman would not be impressed.

  5. Talk about stupidity!!!

Crazy developers dont have a clue!

  6. This game goes from bad to worse, it almost makes the exclusivity not worth it!

  7. Ridiculous.
I defo won’t be getting this anymore.
    Just seems poor now.

  8. I was really hyped about this game, then after the initial reviews I was becoming a bit unsure about the purchase – buying this and GH Smash Hits in the same week would have taken all my spare cash.

Now the decision has been made – just GH for me.

  9. Why is the PS3 version worse when it is exclusive to PS in Europe?
    For now anyway.

  10. I think this has pushed me away from getting this game, I reserved it about a week ago, looks like I will get the new Batman game instead. I really wanted this game to be good.

  11. This sucks. It’s one thing to put out a game at a lower res, but to big up how they are doing all this amazing stuff on the PS3 at the same time is disgraceful!

  12. I loved Ghostbusters, and really wanted to get this. However, this has put me right off!

It’s not because the graphics are worse than the 360, but because the developer has half-arsed the game for the PS3. Two years ago, fine. But today there is no excuse for such a drop in res or effects in the PS3 version! Shame on you Terminal Reality. I won’t support shoddy porting and development with my money, i’d rather it go to developers that give a damn.

    • Same here. This is just absolutely appaulling how some developers are so ignorant towards the PS3. Simply shameful.

  13. Thats stoopid. STOO-PID

  14. I wonder how much more work (cost) is needed to run at 720p/1080i/1080p

Quite a few games run at sub-hd resolution as developers struggle to make the trade off between balancing costs, harnessing the supposed power of the machines versus going all out on HD tech

Most of the sub-hd on show so far has been around the 640p resolution so the news that this is EDTV res (same as the Wii I think) is disappointing.

    • I understand why they’ve done this. You may be right with the saving money thing but surely if it has been developed to 720 on the 360 it wouldn’t be a step away to think that it would be just as easy to have the same graphics on the ps3. If it had been the other way round, 720p on the ps3 and 540p on the 360, it may not have been so noticeable. Any chance TSA can get an explanation from them? Go on, be Jeremy Paxman for the day.

      • Erm sorry…… I meant that I don’t understand why they’ve done this.

  15. Why do things like that?? :S
He said himself the PS3 can do more, so why lower the resolution?
