Wow! Yesterday was busy we even had the site crash several times, although I’m not sure if that was because of the huge amount of traffic or the team here at TSA keeping you up to date with a whopping 36 posts. Before the storm whips up again today it’s time to check out one of yesterday’s surprise announcements in a bit more detail, during Sony’s conference we brought you news that the European version of PSN Video Store would be launching in November throughout the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Spain.
The PSN Video Store will give users the ability to rent or purchase movies both in HD or SD for playback on either the PS3 or PSP. At launch there will be hundreds of titles available including Angels and Demons; Bruno; The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe; Crank 2; The Dark Knight; Dead Space: Downfall; Gran Torino; Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix; National Treasure; Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl; Public Enemies; Star Trek; Terminator Salvation; Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen; Valkyrie; and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, hopefully the weekly updates are as substantial as those in the US.
If you choose to rent rather than purchase you have up to a whopping 14 days to watch the content but once playback has started you will have 24 hours before it expires, if you can’t wait until November then SCEE have put together a trailer to whet your appetite.

Great news, I’m definitely going to need a hard drive upgrade by then! Interesting that they had the PS3 slim at the end of the video.

Hey, a mate of mine installed an i-plate yesterday and boosted his ‘broadband’ from 0.12mbps to 1.2mbps. He’s over the moon! The crazy thing is that he’s delighted and yet his connection is not as good as yours.

The HD version will no doubt be encoded with HDCP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCP)
As for the SD versions?

Does anyone know whether the movie’s sound will be 5.1/DTS? Hopefully it’ll be more than Stereo.
Any word on pricing yet, is it gonna be worth cancelling my Blockbuster mail rental thing?

as much as i cant wait for this, will this see a drastic drop in blu-ray sales as lets face it why go to your local store and buy the movie when you could just download it, either i knew upgrading to a 500gb hdd was a good idea wont be long before i need to upgrade again

not to sure about drop in sale…going to shops and website might end up cheaper, and lots of people (me included) like the boxes etc in the rack. just feels more substantial, and gives you the chance to take it with you to a friends.
the rental side of it is great tho, as long as it less than £4! then i wont need to go to blockbusters for HD film rental.lol

well i will deffinately be doing the rentals, that way i’ll know if i want to buy the movie on blu-ray, but its very much dependant on the pricing, and anyways the purchase will only be the movie its not like you’ll get all the extra features like on the discs

Here’s something I’d like to know: will the movies be multi-language? I.e. will I be able to watch everything in english whilst living in Germany?

Anyone know the likely file sizes of SD and HD films through this service? I’m thinking that a lot of people could bust open their download limits quite easily.

Well I downloaded the entire season 2 of the TV show Chuck with like 22 episodes at approx 40 min each and I believe each episode was around 700megs.
Led to my eventual upgrade to 500gig hd.

Some great films for launch, i counted about 3 or 4 that i would purchase for download. I hope they allow export to external HDD as i have about 500gb ready and waiting for this great service.

Yay! finally I can rent HD movies on my PS3…what I always wanted, or is it? I was kind of hoping it would be linked to lovefilm as I have an account there and I can keep my movies indefinitely as long as I pay the monthly stipend, not to talk of my iTunes rentals as well. Does anyone think they will actually rent a movie a la PSN?

Any idea how much memory a HD movie would take up? Because I plan on buying 3 of those launch titles straight away. Do I need to upgrade my HDD from the 60GB one I’ve had since launch (I guess I will probably have to) ?
