Late last week a few lucky websites got hold of the final version of Gran Turismo PSP by way of a voucher code for the PlayStation Store. Sadly, as far as we know this was only sites under the SCE America umbrella, and our request for a sniff went unanswered (TSA pinging SCEA, TSA pinging SCEA). Fortunately, any NDAs on the download appear to be limited to just reviews, so some people are already discussing some of the finer points of what promises to be one hell of a game when it launches for real in just under three weeks.
Firstly, the download comes in at under a gigabyte – 937MB to be precise, which is nice and compact given the sheer amount of cars and tracks available on there. Oddly, there doesn’t appear to be any specifically structured ‘career mode’, but everything you do in the game (apart from time trial) is rewarded allowing you to earn credits and status so that just playing through each track bumps up your ability to buy new cars, which we think works better on a portable format.
To satisfy anyone looking for something a little more hardcore, there’s 102 Challenge Mode events too, which work like license tests.
Finally, we’ve heard that Gran Turismo PSP requires the latest PSP firmware, which is now 6.00, which will hopefully put a stop to those using custom firmware to get around actually paying for their PSP games. Rest assured that GT PSP still has all the tuning and tweaking that Gran Turismo fans are used to, but manages to compact everything down to create what appears to be the perfect portable racing title and will be absolutely worth your money. As soon as we’re able to get our grubby mitts on a code, we’ll be all over it and hopefully in time for the review.
This could be massive.
You can pre-order Gran Turismo PSP here.

No career mode sounds like a huge omission. I’m not sure if I will be buying this now.

as was said the whole game is a career rather than a specific mode, you obviously had no intention of buying it in the first place.

I had every intention of buying this game. I have bought every GT except for GT2 and what appears to be a lack of cups with a limit on which types of car can be used seems strange and leads me to believe that I would not play this game if I buy it.

Bear in mind that we’ve not seen this yet, and although we’re told there’s no specific ‘career mode’ as such, there’s still the same amount of races and things to unlock, it’s just that you’re meant to dip in and out of things without having to invest lots of time in a single lengthy cup, which suits the PSP better I think. I can’t wait for this game.

If I remember correctly, there was never a career mode as such in GT4 on the PS2. You could build up your car collection and enter any race you wanted, in order to win that specific part of the game. It was never set up like a career, ie with race dates etc.

Precisely. GT PSP is really an extension of GT4, and seems perfectly suited IMO.

There has never been a career mode but they had Tourismo mode in which you are limted to which vehicle you could use.

Unfortunately I’ll have to give GT PSP a pass.
I have paid for all my PSP games despite using CFW, but I cannot lose the ability to play my PS1 games and play my PSP games without the ridiculously loud UMD spinning around like a propellar.
Sadly, the CFW advantages for me outweigh the downside of not playing GT.

Just hold out, there is already at least one team working on a CFW based on 6.00

I’m a bit gutted about the lack of a career mode, might not buy this now.
But I haven’t quite written it off as I’m hopeful there will be some other similar mode to make up for it.

As the shockwave said there was no specific career mode in GT4, nor GT5P for that matter. It was a more do as you please whenever you like and we’ll give you credits for it.
For me I was never sure about getting this game, mainly because I need a PSP, and therre aren’t enough decent games coming out (what 3) to justify me getting a PSP.

All which will be pirated to extinction.
Unfashionably, I hope SONY manages to eventually install a security system which can’t be cracked.

We’re not all pirates
I have CFW on my PSP which I use for emulating retro games (which I already own the originals of anyway). I also use it to copy my own PSP games to my memory stick so I can play them without having to have the UMD in.
Basically, I just see all the CFW coders rushing to get a v6.00 CFW out which GTPSP works on, so I doubt it will stop any of the pirates.

Same here. I resent the implication that using custom firmware makes you a pirate!
I pay for all my games but I run CFW because it allows greater control over various aspects of the PSP and also lets me run some great homebrew apps and emulators.

You can’t blame Sony for trying to stamp out piracy.Ok not all custom firmware users are pirates but i’d bet the vast majority are.Maybe Sony could ask the CFW community want apps they use the most and do something inhouse.Probably wouldn’t work with emulators though.

I appreciate that but I am really referring to the implication in this article that we run CFW to rip off games which is not true

Yup, me too. Im one of the legit CFWs.
I only did it because the UMD drive sucks. Loud, slow (in comparison), power hungry and inconvenient. Sony should have started selling games on memory sticks a few years ago, and dropped UMDs. Shame that the PSPgo means that’ll never happen.
Anyway, Im probably going to go back to non-custom FW to play the latest games this holiday, and then get CFW going again when it gets broken into, as it inevitably will be.

That’s awsome.
But do you need a Pandora Battery and a modded chipped PSP and all that stuff to get custom firmware?

Pandora battery and a Magic Memory Stick is all that’s necessary , followed instructions from the youtubes, then you just need the firmware (i have 5.00 m33-6)
from there you can pretty much do anything, emulation is a key point on my PSP

Cool, I’ve just been researching it.
Although I’ve done more complicated things before this looks quite an annoying thing to do, plus cba to buy a Pandoras Battery and Magic memory Stick. Are there any safe and secure retailers online that sell ‘em fairly cheap?

you can try here: http://www.pandoragadgets.co.uk/
and for a Magic memory Stick just follow these instructions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B60nY4ITsOw&feature=related

COOL! Thanks BetaGhast, guess I’ll look into CFW on PSP.

I debated trying to make my own Pandora’s Battery when I first read about CFW but it seems very risky.
If I buy a PSP Go though then I’ll definetly try it on my PSP ‘Slim ‘n’ Lite’.
Cheers for the info.

I think it sounds better than a specific career mode because if you cant complete a particular race, just do another one instead

It sounds like the way GT4 worked with no ’specificic’ career structure but a load of races/cups that you can’t do until you have earned a good/expensive/specific car or mods. I think that works best as you have flexibility to do them as you want and avoid some altogether if you choose to

I suppose your correct actually, plus as Nofi said, this probably will work better on a portable console, as it provides a better ‘pick up and play’ experience.

it doesn’t suck ass, people who pirate SUCK ASS. you might not but the majority do. the excuse for homebrew is weak and emulating old consoles is also murky plus that can be done on so many other devices without allowing people to steal from developers.
BetaGhast | 13/09/2009 20:17

dude, OFW DOES suck ass, and so do pirates, i agree with you there.
Emulation is perfectly legal as long as you own the original game, and as far as emulating old consoles? where the hell can i buy old games while still supporting the developers?
CFW is great because you have complete control over your PSP, as if you suddenly unlocked its full potential.

Agree with you there BetaGhast.
Sometimes emulation is the only way to play classic games as you can’t find original copies anymore. Emulation owns when it works perfectly.
sarky | 13/09/2009 23:01

by stealing from I mean psp developers, emulation is fine but you can do that on other things. CFW allows emulation but by extension allows pirating. I personally want there to be a psp 2 and CFW is threatening that because people won’t buy games.

I admit I was a bit dispppointed to read that there isn’t a career mode, but that’s not going to stop me from buying this game. I’m sure it will still be a lot of fun though, and if you’re going to be rewarded with credits for winning races, then that’s not too dissimilar from career mode anyway!!!
