Apparently Polyphony Digital are going all out with Gran Turismo 5 and are planning to include a track editor.  I wasn’t aware that rumours were flying around either way on this one but it appears there has been some talk.  “Yes it will have a track editor,” said the developers to E4G. “You will be able to rebuild a track from scratch or edit the tracks that are already put in Gran Turismo 5.”

I don’t want to sound like a miserable sceptic, but I’m having a hard time believing that Polyphony skipped the usual strictly controlled PR route for this one and revealed something new to a blog.  Also, how exactly do you ‘rebuild a track from scratch?’  I’m guessing if there is a track editor in GT5, it’ll simply be an option to remove a GP corner or some other minor change – don’t expect ModNation Racers here.

Thanks, Ghostviper, colmshan1990.

  1. Well that’s an extra I wasnt expecting.

  2. An extra I wasn’t expecting or wanting. I don’t care about a track editor – get the friggin’ game out!

    • I concur, the delays are getting silly

      • 1 delay? Crazy.

      • Has it been delayed? I don’t recall a release date.

I’d sooner the game be as perfect as it can be, than sat on the shelves in time for Christmas.

      • What cc_star said, there has never been a European or NA release date, we only have ever had the March 30th release date for Japan so far.

It will be released when its ready and will be all the better for it.

      • ?! delay

      • I think doddsy meant to say the additional dev time is getting silly.

    • Agreed but if the Editor doesn’t delay the release date then awesome!

  3. Im really looking forward to modnation racers, and having track editor in GT5 will be brilliant if you can make your own tracks.

  4. At first i thought “oh, great” but now, hrmmmmm…..
Not sure if this fits in with the whole spirit of GT. I also wonder if it will be overlycomplicated and not very intuitive.
It would be much better, in my opinion, if thewy brought this out as a piece of DLC (keeping the code in the game to play the tracks, just not make them) so users could decide if they want it with the game.

    • What’s the point? Seriously. If you really don’t want to make your own track, just down select the option on the game menu. I reaally don’t get why people suggest taking something out of the game because they don’t want to play it. Others do.

I don’t understand why GT gets so much stick these days. A new feature, which in my eyes could be absolutely amazing, gets the usual ‘hmmm’ form the TSA community. Where was all the negativity when Forza 3 released a game with a couple of new circuits, a handful of new cars, CRAP AI, a poor game menu, and a tunnel at Suzuka Circuit that still looks absolutely NOTHING like the real thing. At least PD are taking a massive step between 4 and 5. WRC, Nascar, 1000+ cars, day/night, TRACK EDITOR, possible livery editor, weather, and the list goes on. Not to mention the fact it’s visually stunning. If an alright ‘update’ got a 10/10 with barely anything new, I’ll be very very sad to see GT get anything less.

      • Well we have to wait till the game comes out but am sure I will love GT. My name kinda gives that away though…

      • Bravo, andytorr. Well said.

      • Forza 3 has ‘CRAP AI’?

Bullshit, mate, I’d have expected more from you.

      • To be fair they spend a lot of the time driving straight off the track without braking for no reason and also ignoring your position at times. Its better than GTs but not by much at all.

      • I’ve been playing Forza 3 all night, every night since it’s release. I’m not the only one to notice the problems with the AI, almost everyone I race with online has the same issues. The AI cars simply do not move from the racing line. Sure, if you’re tearing down the straight at Circuit De La Sarthe, and you’re up against a Veyron, it’ll avoid you as it overtakes. But if at any time you’re coming into a corner side by side with any computer car, they stick to the racing line like a scalextric. This is especially bad if you’re on the inside, because you always get wiped out, and they continue racing like nothing happened. It even happens if you’re in front of them and brake a littler earlier… SHUNT. In any racing sim, I’d expect the AI to represent the sim as much as possible. Avoiding a crash at a corner, anticipating the car ahead to brake earlier, moving aside if someone is creeping around the inide of you on the apex.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Forza 3, it’s a brilliant game. But there are a lot of things in Forza 3 I hate. So much so that I’ve completely given up on season play after season5, and refuse to add any AI cars into multiplayer.

      • As JamboGT just said before me… “ignoring your position at times” hit’s the nail on the head.

      • Good points raised but day/night and weather are not confirmed (and to be honest, I don’t expect dynamic day/night or weather).

      • Well said Mr Torr!

    • I have to say that there has never been AI in a racing game that impressed me. The closest was Toca Race Driver 2, or the Indycar game of codies.

Racing games for me have always been about time trials or multiplayer.

  5. If it happens I reckon it will be aking to PGR2, not expecting much though. If there is I will be pleasantly surprised.

Also it was a Sony rep, not directly from PD so I would take this with a pinch of salt.

  6. A track editor, really?  Why not release the game already.  How long has the PS3 been out now?

    • i think the game has been in development for years, but they have not delayed, and delayed it…they just let people know they have been working on it. Really they should of announced it last year, around E3, then people wont mind. But as the public have been aware of development for so many years, its starting to gripe with its fans

    • I tell you why,

Sony and Polyphony Digital want to have the absolute best racing sim available anywhere, and they will release it when they consider it to be perfect.

Perfect AI, perfect cars, perfect tracks, perfect graphics and perfectly annoying music and menu sounds, and hopefully perfect damage modelling (seeing as they’ve gone down that route)

Until the game is perfect the master-craftsmen will keep honing and polishing it.

Personally I find it quite refreshing that someone isn’t rushing a game out to be on the shelves for Christmas and then releasing day 1 patches to sort out the inevitable problems.

Personally I find GT a bit boring and despite loving shaving hundredths of a second off my lap times with GTIII A-Spec, I found GT4p, GT4 & GT5p boring as hell. but I appreciate the work which goes into it, and not one other single game (ever?) has had as much work as this one.

      • I would be so amused if it finally came out in 2010 and was totally naff.

      • Pretty sure they said a while back “we could release now if we wanted”.  I’ve no issue with polishing a game and ensuring no bugs etc, I just wonder how much of this extra effort will be worth it or noticeable?  I doubt it’ll be that perfect (but an improvement on the AI would be appreciated!)

And as much as I love the GT series I don’t care for the fact that there are a bizzilion different models of a Skyline or whatever they’re busy doing.

      • i agree with that cc! i hate having to patch a game the 1st time i place it in the system!!!

  7. Once again, Polyphony seem to be straying from the correct course of action but this is my opinion and nothing else.

Simply put, build a stunning game, don’t worry about hundreds and hundreds of cars. I’d pay money (keep in mind that I’ve left the GT franchise long ago) for a game where 50 or so cars were utterly life-like in every way, the courses with attention-to-detail that it’d put tears in your eyes and drop-dead-gorgeous AI that made me feel like I was really racing. Not passing moving markers every lap or so.

  8. This is only a rumour at the moment, until i see a press release from PD i won’t believe it.

I think it would be good to have a track editor in the sense that tracks are given multiple layouts and you can choose a combination to create a ‘new’ track. It’s been something i think GT has lacked, a good number of tracks and ones with variation. A lot of the tracks i feel are made to suit a particular cars handling or strengths, then of course you have the real world tracks which are nice. Many of the real world tracks have multiple layouts and routes, so it would be good to be able to edit these and then post them for some races with friends online etc.

If the mode described is along those lines and the game has been delayed to include it, then it gets a thumbs up from me. It would certainly give the game some longevity beyond the standard tracks.

    • And we have a winner,
This sounds hte most likely, I know PD are magicians, but squeezing a game like GT5 onto a BD-DL must be hard in it’s own rights, but to add a complete editor in would need a hell of a lot more space given the detail in the tracks.

    • I agree, PD are such perfectionists I can’t see how the game would ever be ready if they tried to do a full track editor as well. Most likely it’ll be options such as layout, weater, time of day, etc.

  9. it would be nice to just have them release the game, but if they are truly working on things and adding features (track builder / head tracking), then it will be worth it.

i also think its worth noting that when people talk about review scores its all subjective…this game is a pure racing sim, so a very acquired taste. don’t go expecting it to get a 10/10.

  10. Wonder if it will be a bit like Far Cry 2’s

For some reason I just can’t see it being like Modnation Racer’s where you just drive along to create the track.

    • Agreed.

I mean, Modnation racers is clearly aiming for the cartoony charm style production and driving along leaving road behind is part of that. For GT I’d expect something like a highly specialised rollercoaster tycoon track builder.

  11. I hope it is a fully fledged track editor but I remain doubtful. It does sound more like what nofi suggested in changing from one layout to another on certain tracks or maybe options for time of day and weather.

    • Another winner (and no I’m not giving anything away)
It could be a track condition editor as you said, a track editor doesn’t have to mean a track creator.

      • Not even a Jas-n chequebook and pen? ;)

I really cant see a fully fledged editor/creator unless its done as a patch, even then I very much doubt it.

  12. I know it’s only a rumour at this stage, but I can’t say I’m particularly bothered one way or the other about whether a track editor is included or not. If it is, I’m sure I’ll experiment with it though!! ;)

  13. Whow, this is good news! Im really looking forward to this one! Ive a collection of cars on the PSP that i’m looking forward to using on GT5. But, the sceptic in me says that even though they said you could bring the cars over from the PSP edition, it just might be a big fat lie! In any case, it should be an excellent game with the addition of the NASCAR and WRC franchise. And i can see what andytorr about the AI in Forza 3, but then again, i do exactly the same to the AI myself!!!!

  14. Believe it when I hear official confirmation but it would be good, especially if you can share and race online with them.

  15. don’t expect ModNation Racers here yep
