The next firmware update looks like it’s going to feature Facebook, according to the images below taken directly from playstation.com. Along with some kind of integration with the social behemoth, the XMB will also feature a new way to view photographs and what appears to be new colours for your Gamercards.
For reference, the links (currently still valid) are http://uk.playstation.com/media/244960/image.jpg, http://uk.playstation.com/media/244961/image.jpg and http://uk.playstation.com/media/244974/image.jpg – and are in Portugese. The Facebook screen looks like a setting, rather than just a link.
Interesting, huh?
Update: English screen added, text says: “Adjust settings for features in Facebook. These features are available only for users who have Facebook accounts.”
Cheers, Cjdamon042, via ScrawlFX.

Automatic. Trophy. Tweeting. Yeah, that would make my day.
Uncharted 2 tweeting is rather underpowered, it doesn’t tell what exactly you did, and instead of “from UNCHARTED2″ you get “from API”, which is also annoying.

Looks sexy as hell!
Although… it will just be a link to the internet browser like iPlayer.

I don’t think so – why would a link to a site have it’s own options menu?

Probably, never tried connecting to Facebook through PS3. Suppose its worth trying out now to confirm your thoughts.

Cool. The colours thing is a nice addition but Facebook will just be a shortcut like iPlayer as blair has just said.

Twitter would be much easier as the API is freely available. Uncharted 2 already has an option to post twitter updates based on your progress in game

Facebook Connect is the open API for Facebook, so it wouldn’t be an issue. Facebook Connect is just less well known.

As mynameisblair said ‘Integration’ might be too strong an implication. I suspect just a PS3 formatted version like iPlayer. It would be cool if we could link accounts to post screenshots, automatic updates and trophy status etc but I doubt that, at least not straight away.

That is great! I hope it isnt just a link to the website like BBC iPlayer because facebook on the Xbox 360 is great and I hope it will be just as good on the PS3.

Can anyone make out what the text says under the FB icon, stick it in Google translate and then we might know if its an app or shortcut

I can speak portuguese. My mum is from brazil but I will need a microscope to see what that says. If you zoom in the picture it just goes blurry.

Yeah, as BetaGhast said, you already can. But the game developers have to put it in the specific game. Wipeout has it and LBP has it in create mode. There are more but I dont recall them right now. Its still early…

the Facebook logo clearly isn’t in the settings menu, its in the account information menu.
Remember when we were promised Facebook integration ages ago?
This will be a setitng you switch on or off in your user information.
I’m guessing it will update when you start playing a game and when you buy a game.
Awesome

Hi, the text on the Facebook screenshot is in Portuguese. It says “Adjust configurations (settings) for Facebook functionalities. This feature is only available to users who have an account on Facebook”.

Looks like one won’t be able to register, so it’s probably not just a link. I guess you’ll enter your account details (user/pass/other) and it will update telling your friends about trophies, games you’ve been playing and other stuff. Doing this for twitter would be *really* easy too.

Nice to see extra features being added, not sure how much i would use it though. A twitter able you are able to use through the in-game XMB would be even better!

yea nice one Kotick , we gave you your sodding billions and in return …… is this why the RRP was so expensive so you could thoroughly test the game before releasing .

PSN not having enough capacity isn’t really anything to do with a dev it’s down to Sony

but putting out patches that break more than they fix is down to the devs.
