We’re still waiting for an English press release, but apparently Konami Germany have confirmed that the European PSN Store will get the much delayed PlayStation classic Metal Gear Solid this Thursday.
I don’t speak German, but that’s clearly talking about Metal Gear Solid, for 10 Euro. From the press release it looks like the reason behind the release is the upcoming PSP title, Peace Walker. Let’s hope for UK news soon.
Update: Konami have sent us the English press release:
Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced it will release four classic Metal Gear Solid titles via Sony’s PlayStation(R)Network service.
The news comes as Konami gears up for the anticipated release of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable), and will begin with the reissue of the original PSone version of Metal Gear Solid on November 19th, priced £7.99. Hailed as an all-time classic and one of the most influential video games of modern times, Metal Gear Solid marked the series’ first move into a fully 3D play area, and established Hideo Kojima as an iconic talent.
The release of Metal Gear Solid will then be followed with Kojima Productions’ PSP(R) entrants to the series: Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops +, and the innovative Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel. Release dates for these titles will be confirmed at a later date.

Google Translate says it’s to celebrate Peace Walker, it’ll be 9.99 Euros, and that they’re announcing “…the release of four Metal Gear Solid classics on Sony’s PlayStation (R) Network…”

May well be old school Metal Gears or a wrong translation. Again, based off Google translate. Babelfish seems to agree basically, but the translation isn’t as good

German guy in office says it’s a bit complex for him, but he agrees basically with Google Translate. Would wait for an English press release for confirmation

…Konami announces the release of four Metal Gear Solid Classics… and
…the first to be released is…

or (sorry to be disappointing but) MGS1, MGS Portable Ops, MGS Acid and MGS Digital Graphic Novel…
(I would love a port of MGS3 though!)

another possibility of course is in that four they are including the VR missions expansion pack?
So perhaps, MGS, MGS:VR Missions and then Acid 1 and 2? I’d love to play those VR missions again and play as Ninja or fight the super giant soldier

VR Missions would have been brill, but still you gotta be grateful for what you’re given I suppose.

I wonder which is worse moaning about games that take an age to see the light of day in SCEE land or moaning about others moaning !!!
At least moaning about lack of releases may achieve something.

I’m losing interest in “classic” games! I have been spoilt by next gen graphics and find it really hard to get into any ps1 classics at all.

With Peace Walker coming out, it would have been nice to play the older version before release, not during it. Capcom and SCEE made the same mistake with SFII, by releasing it at approximately the same time as SFIV – thereby hurting sales.

Isn’t Peace Walker not out till next year? This is coming November 19th by the look of it, plenty of time.

wasn’t that down to scee, i remember on the official capcom forums they were left wondering for months what scee were doing with the game.
pretty much the same exact situation that’s happening now with the mua2 dlc.

yeah, but if you listen to SCEE they’d say they kept retuning to to Capcom as buggy (think lag was the main moan) although that’s never stopped SCEE before with plenty of other games, during that time 100’s thousands of Americans were playing it as well.
I got a reply for a Capcom head honcho on the US blog, who said SCEE are a different beast altogether.

from what i read they returned it a couple, maybe three times, and every time scee took the new code it took them months to get back to capcom.
and it’s been a long time since i’ve trusted anything scee say.

There were serious bugs with the initial release;
http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2009/03/street-fighte-1/
Once Capcom had the patch ready, the game came out in Europe. Either you complain about games releasing late or games coming out before they’re ready, but you can’t have it both ways.

if that patch was the reason why the game took months to come out in europe why was it released weeks after the eu release of the game?
and why did the developers on the official capcom forums not have a clue what was going on?
jacklum | 16/11/2009 16:12

OK, I’d assumed it came out at the same time as the patch but the patch was actually a couple of weeks later. Maybe SCEE decided to release it once Capcom had assured them a patch was on the way or something. Judging by the state of the initial release, I wouldn’t put too much stock in what the developers were saying either (Backbone have since gone on to release Gunstar Heoroes with a completely broken online component as well, so I won’t be buying any of their games again).

or, the more likely scenario given the bemusement of the dovs on the official capcom forum, was that scee just sat on the game for months and then finally decided to release it on the very worst possible day, that being the day before street fighter 4’s release.
i’d put a hell of a lot more stock in what the devs say than what scee say.
if scee announced the sky was blue i’d go outisde to check it wasn’t suddenly green or orange.

if i were cynical i might say that this being pulled out of the hat just now after months of no news whatsoever might be one way of deflecting attention away from the apparent lie about scee not receiving content.
good job i’m not cynical
