Does Modern Warfare 2 Finally Fix The PS3’s Invite System?

Modern Warfare shows us the way.

Sony’s PS3 interface, the XMB, has been steadily growing since its launch in 2006 - constantly evolving, not always in the right direction, but at least we’re getting a trickle feed of new features every few months.  One thing we don’t properly have yet, though, is a universal cross-game invite system, the ability to invite your friends to a game regardless of what game they’re currently playing themselves.  Sure, some games have it written into the software, but the system is neither univeral nor straightforward, especially compared with the slick, easy to use 360 alternative which works for every game straight out of the box because it’s part of the system.

But back to the PS3, and in particular Activision’s Modern Warfare 2, which does at least attempt to incorporate a decent invite system, which you can do from two directions.  The first, an actual invite, is done by the host from within a game – I tried this when playing a bit of co-op with Michael the other day and it’s fine – not perfect, but it works pretty slickly and assuming your friend is watching the pop-up notifications you shouldn’t have any problem putting together a party.  Where MW2 excels, though, is in the way you can use the PS3’s XMB to actually join a game, something of a first for PlayStation 3 owners looking to get into some online action.

There are two ways to do this: the first is to navigate to your friends name on the XMB, press Triangle and then select ‘Join Session’, and the second (and totally brand new to PS3) way is by selecting your Friend’s name on the XMB, bringing up their gamercard, and then at the bottom you will see five icons. The first one, which has a picture of a controller, is the ‘Modern Warfare 2 Menu’. By selecting this icon a smaller menu will come up with the option to ‘Join Session’ & ‘Invite to Game’. This is great, and the way it should be done, but it seems that these options are only available if you are currently playing Modern Warfare 2 as well.

This is actually a really cool feature, and one that personally I’d not seen before until reader AJ pointed it out to us. When most PS3 games are struggling to get themselves a decent invite system within the game that actually works 100% it appears that Sony have already done the hard work on the system’s XMB interface and it just needed a high profile game to show developers how it’s meant to be done. The multiple ways to get into a Friend’s game in Modern Warfare 2 show how simple such a service should be, and why it doesn’t have to all be done in customised code – the best, most efficient way is already in place. Other developers, take note.

Thanks, AJ.

  1. it will do till Sony hopefully make it standard

  2. It’s VERY good. Sometimes when I load up MW2, the thought of sending out multiple invites is just, meh. But to just be able to join session, it’s fantastic, really pleased.

  3. Maybe some news, but you can actually join your friend when playing no game.

  4. Just a pity it required a patch to do this. Oh, and it (supposedly) BROKE THE TROPHY SYNC SYSTEM!!
    (Deep breath.)
I didn’t buy it, is it really that much better than COD4?

    • It’s leagues better. Same concept, but I find it to be much better executed.

  5. MW2 really has allowed the XMB to improve greatly. The invite system never, ever fails anymore for me and the ‘Join Session’ option is useful and always works fine too. All we need is cross-game chat to confirm an experience that lives up to Xbox Live.

  6. Nice, I can’t see myself using it much though.

  7. It’s a good idea, but It’s by no means perfect.
First of all, I can’t join a session unless the person is actually playing a game. If they are in the lobby waiting on the game to start, I can’t join? Why not? Even worse, it’s confusing because if I try to join a session (as some of you might discover) the option is missing… I just don’t see it, so I get confused, wonder what I’m doing wrong, and think it must be another bug. It’s doesn’t make sense that I can’t join in until after the game starts (and is possibly full by now).
The ‘invite a friend’ option is a bit clunky. There’s just a lot of scrolling up and down the friends list, poping in and out of the XMB… it’s a nice idea, but it just feels like a pain. Why does it have to be so labour intensive. It’s simple, I want to invite 1 (or many) friends. It should take two button presses, and no more. Any more and it’s a lazy implementation.
Uncharted 2 did one thing well (actually it did a lot of thing well, but just thinking about invite system for the moment). It’s sorted your friends list so that any friends playing Uncharted 2 were at the top of the list. tbh, it’s not such a problem right now because almost everyone on my friends list is playing MW2… but that won’t always be the case, so finding friends playing the same game as me is going to be a bit tedious.
Like I said, it’s a nice idea, just not executed very well. I think Sony tend to think about the functional, with out considering usability (Facebook anybody?). it works (mostly), and it’s something that we couldn’t do before. That’s great. But why does it have to be such a pain to use? Sony are attempting to make a better invite system that allows cross game invites. Ok, but now inviting within a game just got a little bit more complicated. Joining parties or inviting people to your party on the original MW worked really well. It was really quick and easy. Joining parties or inviting people on MW2 is not as simple.
So maybe they’ll streamline it later now that the ‘hard’ stuff is done. But if I was a game developer, I’d be reluctant to implement this system as it is. I wonder if the Uncharted 2 guys had the option and decided to pass?
And what’s the big deal about cross game invites anyway? Isn’t that what the chat rooms are for?

    • The option is not available if the friend’s whose game/lobby you’re trying to join is full.
I find it to be very intelligent and useful.

  8. It works perfectly which is great, had many problems with joining friends on COD4 + COD5. Didnt know you go get to it via their gamer card so thanks

  9. it is not the first game where it allows you join a game on ps3, bad company and battlefield 1943 did it before mw2!

    • But not via the XMB. BF1943 used an in-game method.

    • Loads of games do it within their own software environment, its generally an inelegant scattergun approach, but the point of this article is that its done from the XMB

  10. Great invite system, only thing is when I try to send a message and click “join session” by mistake, argh!

  11. I love this feature, and I figured that most users weren’t aware of it. I was right. :)
It really beats sending your friend an “INVITE ME!” message and having your friend have to pause, invite etc.
As I posted in an earlier reply, the option is only available if the friend’s game isn’t full. So even if a friend is playing MW2 multiplayer, which you can see in their status, you may not have the option available.
If your friend’s game isn’t full, you may join it, but you’ll be put on whichever team has room. And you are not automatically “partied up” when returned to the matchmaking lobby after that game, so you may end up on the opposite team than your friend.
I’ll admit that hunting your friend down and torturing them throughout the game can be quite enjoyable. :)

    • PS nofi, why does my name still come up as “BlingOnMyWrist” when I reply to stories while I login with AJ and show up in the forums as AJ as well?

  12. I wanted to comment on this earlier today, but I was checking the feeds on my phone and it would take too long. So this may have already been said.

The join session feature is great. Although as you’re not partied the person you joined doesn’t show as blue on the radar (if you have radar) and you can’t guarantee to be on their team at all.

The invite system however, has been ruined from the old COD4 system. Sure you can now invite anyone who is online no matter what they are playing, but all it is is essentially a message. By the time they swap to COD MW2 the session will most likely have expired. Also some may disagree, but the old system it took literally 2 seconds to invite all your friends who were playing cod, just press “down, x, down, x, down x” now it’s “PS button, down, triangle, x, down x. PS button, down, triangle, x, down, x” this is much longer as you have to wait for everything to load.

What we need is a hybrid system where by if you just load up your friend list you get to the join session in the same style as introduced by Modern Warfare 2. But when you hit invite in the Modern Warfare it brings up a list of friends online (no matter what game they are playing) with tick boxes by their name, you press x on everyone you want to invite and then start to send all the invites at once.

    Surely this is much quicker?

  13. It was never broken on Bad Company 2 :P

  14. They need this in all PS3 games. Quite funny seeing everyone getting excited tho as its a regular on 360, such a great feature.

    • yeh i had an xbox and its long time no see, i thought it would never happen. but somehow it came. But how did it come out before private chat, surely talking to a friend privatly is much easier to make.

  15. Its good but what i really want is that when a friend sends you a msg, you push the ps button and it should take you straight to that message, instead of having to open the xmb, slide it over eh.

anyway this joining game stuff looks cool, i havent got mw2 yet, and i cant wait to secretly join my friends game and shoot em lol
    well done sony/activision! *cough*private chat??!*cough* eh
