Getting the best from the DualSense Edge – 8 games to try with the PS5 pro controller

DualSense Edge Review Header

Whether you’re someone that likes to switch between games, or are a single game lifer, the DualSense Edge PS5 pro controller has tons of customisability and can switch on-the-fly to suit different games and situations. But what are the best games for DualSense Edge, to make the games will make the most of this $200 / £210 controller?

Ultimately it will be down to you to create custom profiles, tweak settings and control schemes to your liking, but we’ve picked out eight games that can either take all the complexity of custom profiles and handle quick switching, or can be super straightforward to get a quick and natural control layout tweak.

A word of warning: you will need to get used to the changes that you’re making, whether that’s adjusting to using back buttons for jumping, or the difference that stick sensitivity curves can make.

Apex Legends

Respawn’s Apex Legends remains one of the best and most popular battle royale games out there, and it’s this type of competitive gaming community that pro controllers are really geared towards. Naturally this genre features some of the best games for DualSense Edge.

Apex Legends already has a bunch of in-game settings for customising the controls and it’s own in-built response curves. If you’ve already customised the settings in-game you can stick with the default stick sensitivity curve on DualSense Edge, but there’s also a ‘Linear’ option that maps to raw input, allowing you to put the onus on the custom profiles. You can set a different curve for each stick, giving all the more flexibility.

Battle Royales mix together both long range and close quarters encounters, so the Dynamic setting is ideal here, with a faster response in the middle range of stick motion and slower in smaller and longer turns. Combine that with the longer domed stick header and you’ll have great sensitivity. Alternatively, use the quick custom profiles to switch between Quick and Precise sensitivity depending on your loadout.

Battle royale games like Apex Legends are perfect for the DualSense Edge.

Beyond that, the back buttons come in useful to keep your thumbs on the sticks. Many people have switched to the ‘Button Puncher’ layout, putting sprint and crouch on L3/R3, but now you can assign jump and melee to have them back under your fingers and keep your thumbs on the sticks.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Similar to Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and other more arena-based shooters are also amongst the best games for DualSense Edge’s capabilities. As one of the first games I tested out the back buttons on for our review, my initial thought was to simply remap the L3/R3 stick clicks to the back buttons, giving me a more deliberate melee and snap to cover when aiming down sights. Depending on the style of play and loadout your gravitate toward, you can tweak the stick sensitivity with Steady for sniping, Precise for medium range, Quick for close quarters snap shots.

If you’re thinking of high-end competitive play, though, then the ability to switch between different roles could be important, and the profile quick switching enables you to instantly hop to a set up for a particular loadout. Swapping is as quick as pressing the left Function (Fn) button and a corresponding face button that you’ve assigned.

Don’t forget to shift the trigger stops to the shortest setting, to shave off a millisecond when trying to fire your gun.

Trigger stops and back paddles really help in a lot of fast-paced games.

Horizon Forbidden West

With plenty of ways to give yourself a bit of breathing room in combat, Horizon Forbidden West is pretty forgiving on a regular controller thanks to gear switching and slow-down abilities letting you take a little bit of time. That doesn’t mean that the DualSense Edge doesn’t come in handy, though!

Given the style of combat, the Steady stick sensitivity curve will help you line up weak spots by giving you smoother and more stable movement. You can also keep your thumbs on the analogue sticks by mapping the back buttons for quick item usage, either for when cycling through items, or perhaps for using health packs and the selected item – this is true of plenty of action adventure and action RPG games with quick inventory switching.

God of War: Ragnarök

God of War: Ragnarök is a nice and straight forward one for the DualSense Edge. With heavy attacks mapped to the R2 trigger, you might want this attack to feel more button-like, similar to the light attack. Set the trigger stop to its shortest setting to do just that.

Meanwhile, your right thumb will be pretty free to handle both camera control and face buttons, but you could still want to map the dodge to one of the two back buttons. Alternatively, use them for quick switching between two of the weapons that are on the D-pad, so your left thumb can be glued to movement.

Make heavy attacks feel more button-like with the short trigger stops.

Sniper Elite 5

Sniper Elite 5 is another pretty straightforward one, and you can probably guess the suggestions from shooters up above. The Steady or Precise sensitivity curve should help with aiming at long range, especially if combined with the tall domed stick on the right.

As for the back buttons? They’re not so essential for a more considered game like this, but you could use them for zooming in and out while scoped.

Returnal

Keep your thumbs on the analogue sticks during Returnal’s high action moments and bullet hell bosses by mapping the back buttons to jump and dash for evading incoming attacks. If you value instant responsiveness with your weapons, then switch to the ‘Classic’ controller layout and switch the adaptive trigger stops to their shortest amount of travel.

Gran Turismo 7

If you’re really into racing games, then chances are that you’d be eyeing up a racing wheel instead of a DualSense Edge, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still be fast with a gamepad and that you don’t get benefits from it.

There’s different things you can do to enhance your driving in Gran Turismo 7, such as using the long domed stick header and the Steady stick sensitivity curve to smooth our your inputs. Additionally, you’ll ideally want to keep your left thumb glued to the left analogue stick, but the quick car settings and radar demand you lift it and tap on the D-Pad. Similar to inventory the management in action RPGs, you could keep your thumb on the stick by mapping left and right D-pad buttons to the back.

Street Fighter 6 & Tekken 8

Similar to racing games, plenty of fighting game fans will have eyed up a fight stick for that arcade fighting experience. On gamepad, it’s all about the D-pad for that defined 8 directions of movement… but with Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 on the horizon – no, they’re not actually out yet, but when they land on PlayStation 5, millions will be picking them up – the DualSense Edge could get you the best of both worlds with the Digital stick sensitivity curve.

Essentially, tilting the stick even slightly in any direction will register nearly maximum input with this sensitivity curve, making it function more like directional buttons so you can get instant input and reactions.

That’s our selection of eight, but if you’re grabbing Sony’s expensive new gamepad, then hopefully this has given you some inspiration for what it can do. Want to know more of its tricks? Check out our DualSense Edge review here, and learn how to replace the analogue stick modules.
