PSN Down Tomorrow – New Store? [105]

As we said a little while back, the PS3 is due for system software 3.15 this week, now official on the EU Blog.  Minis, as has been rumoured for a little while, will indeed now be playable on your PS3.  “If you have already brought a mini for PSP and want to get it on your PS3 as well,” says the Blog, “just go to your download list in the Store and download it again for free. The game will then work on your PS3 as well. Simple!”

In addition, the transfer from PS3 to PS3 was real too.  This feature, says the article, enables you to easily transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another. So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t lose any of your existing content. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3.

Both great new features.  To see what’s available on the Minis platform, click here.

  1. I saw you little mess up :P 1.5 that was a while ago :D I like the ps3 to ps3 stuff makes it alot easier. Haven’t looked at the minis at all better click that link.

  2. Does anyone know if save files that wouldn’t transfer via USB before (Guitar Hero: World Tour, Rockband, etc.) will now transfer via this method? It sucked having to start RB2 all over again, but I guess this doesn’t help me now…

    • here, here I ahave Rock band data I cannot take across to my new slim

    • I’d be interested to hear the answer to that as well. Would be great to be able to backup protected game files.

      • I believe this is the only way u can save/backup the protected game files, So its a YES.

  3. So now the 1000 Euro PSP dev kit gets you distribution on the PSP and PS3? That’s pretty insane.

    • A good way for Sony to hoover up all the talented indie devs a la Media Molecule too.

      • True. On the other hand the iPhone dev kit is the cost of a Mac (a Mac mini is £500ish) plus the SDK(£99 with worldwide distribution). That’s save £300 or so, a big deal for a developer. And if they’ve already got a Mac (which you could do, not like you’ll already have a PSP dev kit) it’s way cheaper.

      • True, but PSP+PS3 user-base dwarves that of the iPhone installed base… and you have to give everything away for free on the iPhone, so you’ve got almost zero chance of making your $99 back unless you’re at least a semi-professional publisher.

      • I agree with CC on this. A few friends and I looked into getting an iPhone dev kit and the truth is very few people manage to recoup even the small initial investment. Increasingly experimental developers are looking at the Android SDK because there is no initial investment and if more phones like the recent Droid come out, the demand for said platform will only get bigger. Also with a PSP dev kit, you can cut your teeth on a mini but then transition up to full scale projects or engine creation.

      • Problem with the Android platform (with regards to making money) is that its roots are in the open source community and as such there is no shortage of people giving everything away for free, so it could be just as hard (if not harder) to make money on that platform when faced with sort of competition.

  4. Excellent. Just bloody brilliant Sony! I’ve lost all my Singstar high scores on my upgrade to the slim and now you release a data transfer system! Although saying that I had to sell my PS3 to upgrade to the Slim so it probably wouldn’t have mattered anyway…

  5. I haven’t been paying attention to the PSP Minis (what with not being able to play them until now), but I might check them out now. Any recommendations?

    • I recommend you DON’T buy Brainpipe. I really liked the look of it, but I find it way too fiddly with the PSP analogue stick.

Mind you, having said that, it might be a different story on the PS3 with a proper analogue stick.

      • I played the demo of Brainpipe (Mac version) and thought it seemed pretty cool. Ran really smoothly, nice trippy visuals and it controlled well with a mouse. It seems I saw pretty much all the game had to offer during the free one hour demo though – one game mode with 10 levels. Does the PSP version have more content than that?

    • i have not looked at them at all either, will have to take a quick glance later on and check them out

    • Yes. How about these ones? Hope that helps :) (Note each word is a different link ;) )

      • bloody clever clogs…

      • Thanks. I knew I’d seen a PSP minis round up on here, but I went looking for them in the reviews section. Will probably give Fieldrunners a shot and maybe a couple others (depending on whether I win the Gravity Crash comp or not…).

  6. I suspect some other stuff under the hood of this will sort out sync issues with pads and trophies. I reckon these features were in the pipeline and have been pulled forward to sort the issues people have reported on in the last weeks rather then release a mysterious ‘improves playback of some PS3 content’ firmware.

Sony are on a roll from the big boost in sales so niffty features like the transfer option keep the momentum going.

I can believe that the minis are getting a full blown PS3 outing! Can anyone who has one check it out on the PS3 and let us know the resolution etc. Thats just made the PSN even more awesome!

    • I hope so, they have planned downtime on Thursday, let’s hope sync bug is fixed then.

      • Yup, sync issues have caused my son to get quite upset (he’s only 4.5) as he thought it was his fault. It’s also bl@@dy annoying when you have 30 minutes free for a quick frag fest and you have to spend 10 minutes turning the PS3 on/off to get the controllers to sync.
Strange how the sync issue doesn’t happen every time.
        Anyway, yay to controller syncing!

    • Minis on PS3 is cool, but the newest update should really have been all about the bug fixes. I’m flipping out from the DS3 pairing issue…

      • I haven’t had any issues with pairing etc so i cant say its bugging me, although if it was happening to me i would be flipping out also.

I have had problems with trophy syncing but after about 3/4 tries and a couple of minutes at 83% is syncs up and all is well….. gotta creep up the TSA trophy table after all, this might be my only opportunity to do it with so many of you unable to sync!

  7. Cooll but i want voice chat in game

    • Most games already have voice chat.

    • And I want a trio of dancing pixies from belgium who will do a fandango to the tune of “Dreamer” by Livin’ Joy – but we dont always get what we want, do we. Shush.

  8. The game transfer option sounds interesting might attempt that on my Dads new ps3 slim from old dead blurayed phat. I too am only hopeful for x game chat \ party invite system. While im on the ask how about something new the ability to send messages to psn friends without the need to be on your ps3. Make it so :)

  9. Wonder if Trophy syncing will appear on the stealth changelog

  10. Sweet. I’ve wanted to get my hands on a few of these minis, but seeing as I don’t have a PSP, I couldn’t. This might push me that extra bit not to bother getting a PSP to be honest seeing as I can now get a load of the PSP stuff on my PS3. Yes, I know it’s not like it’s GT5, or LBP (for PSP) that I can now use.. but well I still stand by my point.
That’s pretty nifty that you can now transfer data from PS3 to PS3.
