The time trial based ‘GT Academy’ version of Gran Turismo 5, which launches this Thursday, has the Indianapolis Speedway GP Circuit (as we said last week) and is just 220MB, according to reports this morning.  The two versions of the Nissan 370z are locked with R1s for the tuned version and N3 for the normal street version and the demo as a whole feels ‘stripped down’.  Apparently it’s your total time that’s going to be taken into account, so you’ll need to be handy with both versions of the car if you want to succeed.

To be honest, I’m a little disappointed.  I know this is meant to just be a proper time trial exercise for the GT Academy, but since GT 5 now won’t be out until at least Summer next year, more could have been done to give us, Polyphony’s rather patient fanbase, something more than just one track and one car – something they did with GTHD back at the launch of the console.  Still, hopefully we’ll get a chance to have some fun little TSA Challenges out of this one for us mere mortals.

  1. Well hey. It’s better than nothing. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on this.

    • my head feel like its about to explode with excitement >.<

    • Totally agree. It’s free and it’s coming this week…

      • Ohhhh great !

  2. Yeah, looking forward to having a crack at this, Probably have little hope of competing on a global level, but maybe the odd TSA challenge might give me a chance ;-)

  3. Bring on thursday! It may only be 1 track + 2 cars but its better than nothing at least…

    • yep, Braid is out on euro PSN thursday too! double whoots! ;)

  4. I can see your point but you need to look at this more as a random challenge event that happens to be using the GT5 engine, rather than a new piece of GT5 for us to try.

  5. When you say GTHD, do you mean Prologue?

    • No, I mean GTHD.

      • When you say GTHD, do you mean prologue…. arrgggh recursion

      • I still fire up GTHD from time to time. It’s pretty easy to get to top of the leaderboards these days.

  6. Yeah, would’ve been nice to see a little more along the lines of GTHD..  Still, Ill be downloading it as soon as it hits the store, I cant get enough GT goodness no matter how little is dripfed to me.

  7. GT is GT and we will lap it up…..

  8. Will this demo be free ? I’m really looking forward to trying this !

    • There has been no mention of a price and they would be silly to charge for a one track time trial so I assume its free.

      • Let’s hope so. Thanks ;) !

  9. I am still looking forward to getting my mitts on this and taking part in the Time trial. Definitely a game for Challenge TSA. The one advantage for me is the file size as my download speed is pish so at least it wont take too long to download.

  10. Although not exactly concerning this subject but its been on my mind. I think its time sony released a new version of the pad. There just isnt enough play in the buttons for you to get a good feel of the breaks etc..! Something like the triggers on the xbox pad would be the way forward. I know you can get cheap clip ons to make the L2 R2 buttons more like triggers but for me they just didnt feel right so I soon got rid.

I guess I could always invest in a steering wheel.

    • There are converters for using 360 controllers on the PS3 but you have to use cables. I would say a steering wheel is a better investment.

      • Go with a steering wheel, you can get a half decent Logitech reasonably cheaply these days, and once you’ve played GT with one, you won’t go back to a controller.
