killzone2

Killzone 2. Gripping, gorgeous and harrowing. Whether it was marvelling at the incredible post processing techniques implemented by Guerrilla Games, writing a gripping tale of our first day on Helghan or creating a massive fan-ficition, Killzone 2 had us gripped from start to finish. Becoming the first – and only game – to alter the TSA review scoring by receiving a 5/5 it fully deserves its place, as TheSixthAxis’ second favourite game of 2009.

Having narrowly missed out on first place, Killzone 2 still gets a cracking video:

This video was produced and edited by David Howard.

In between popping Helghast in the head, some of the staff wrote some kind words for Killzone 2:

“Whilst some may argue that the FPS genre is becoming stale, Killzone 2 offers a graphical masterpiece with atmospheric settings and gritty gameplay. With an iconic enemy, solid story and great leading characters, Killzone 2 cements itself as a PlayStation must. Guerilla Games’ creation also boasts one of the best multiplayer online experiences too.” – Lewis Gaston

“Guerilla Games knew exactly what they wanted to do with Killzone 2 and they hit their target with a rare precision. The realistic combat in a sci-fi setting with smart backstory and near-perfect multiplayer options are just what the PlayStation 3 needed at the start of the year and Killzone 2 has managed to stay interesting for a long time, which is a big achievement considering the amount of titles that have been top-sellers since its release.” – Peter Chapman

“When final code for Killzone 2 popped through the TSA Towers letterbox a couple of weeks before release I was like a child in a sweetshop.  Sure, the online didn’t work until the game hit the shelves but that meant I could leisurely take my time with the single player mode, soaking in the atmosphere and gasping at the visuals.  Other games might well be richer and more grand in scope, but nothing has ever come close to the incredible post processing effects that Guerrilla Games managed to wring out of the PS3 for Killzone 2 – every level looks amazing, the train sequence still jaw dropping.  Of course, the online mode has now become legendary too, so I needn’t have worried.” –  Nofi

Tomorrow, is our favourite game. Are you ready?

  1. Oooh no MW2 so far, wonder what will be number one tomorrow?

    • If its MW2, I’ll top myself.

      • ditto

    • I know what it is and I’m still hoping it’s Rag Doll Kung Fu.

      • GAME OF THE YEAR #1 – UNCHARTED 2: AMONG THIESVES B*****************

    • I would be guessing Uncharted2….

      • Hope so.

      • Yeah, that would be my guess.

      • Im guessing not…  Apart from the MP side, there isnt that much innovation in Uncharted 2 over the first one, so unless it wins purely for the MP aspect, then Im guessing its either MW2 (dont think its this either) or “Something Else” (Assassins Creed 2, perhaps?).

      • Oh right yeah. Cos AC2 is positively brimming with innovation over the 1st one.
        ;)

      • Not UC2, please. The single player game was superb, pushing the PS3 further than any other game to date but the multiplayer is a sack of dog doo doo. After waiting sometimes 5 or 10 minutes for a game it’s often time to turn the thing off and play something else. When I do get a game online there is an average 3rd person run and gun set up with a few scenarios. Not enough of a ‘whole package’ to come first.

    • And no Uncharted 2 either.. so one or the other didnt make are top 5. I’m already stacking sandbags against the doors of TSA Towers for when No.1 is announced. Im expecting angry mobs with pitchforks :)

      • I’ll come round to place some turrets too…

      • It’s Forza III :O

      • Gears of war 2.

    • Modern Warfare 2 was so completely over rated and over hyped, the game was pretty terrible, online play is good don’t get me wrong, but nothing that another company couldn’t pick up and do tomorrow.

      Please for the love of all that is holy do not make MW2 #1 lol ; ;

    • Forgot to add, that is some awesome video editing Davs… like proper awesome.

    • Quite clearly both uncharted 2 and modern warfare 2 deserve a place up in the top 5, both clearly better than flower. In terms of the achievement of making the games and the final product, both are huge, flower, while quite nice is small and short. Just my opinion.

      • Name a game thats like Uncharted.. Tomb raider, Uncharted 2.. easy.. … and now name a game thast like MW2.. MOH, MW1, any one of a million FPS…. and now name a game thats like flower… er.. uhm.. and that’s why it’s in the top 5.

      • I’d have flower ahead of MW2 any day.

      • Gane of the year shouldn’t be doled out for originality. Thats what the “Best original game” category is for.

    • It’s going to be Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Although I hope it is Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time :)

  2. Another awesome video :D

    • Superb!

Gave me the shivers Davs. Although it might be due to the freezing weather.

    • Wholeheartedly agree! It’s an amazing video which really does capture not only the excellent visuals but also the feel of the warfare, the anarchy and the menace. Top work!

  3. ive still not completed this…

  4. The intro speech by Visari still gives my goosebumps… Such a great speech…
    Still loving KZ2 ;)

    • It is quite possibly one of favourite Game-related things of all time. In fact, I would say in my top 10 of game-related things! :D

  5. Awaits THE game of the year and the arguments that will follow

  6. My favourite online experience and I believe the best online game on PS3

    • Ditto. Nuff said.

  7. Can’t argue with that. Personally it is my #1 game of the year but happy TSA staff feel it worthy of #2. Can’t wait to get home to watch the video. Now fingers crossed it is ND at #1 rather than IW.

  8. The intro video to KZ2 has to be my favourite ever, even though i hate the game. I love the bit with Visari on the TV screen and at the bottom it reads “/// Combat Helmets: Are they really nessesary? ///”. Makes me lol every time :)
Must be either Modern Warfare 2 or Uncharted 2 that gets the top spot tomorrow, and both games deserve it! Dont quite know how one of them isnt in the top 5!

    • “Helghan’s atmosphere: A threat to our troops?” lol

  9. Wahey, top video (and music) :)
I was getting chills up me spine!! good work!

p.s we all know Rogue Warrior is at the top spot..er…dont we? ;)

  10. I hope its Demon’s Souls, what a great game!

    • Sorry I meant to put the number one game of the year

    • Demons Souls isn’t released yet in the EU, so I think it would be impossible to include in the GOTY

    • Demon’s Souls is my Game of the Year, I think. Well worth the import.

  11. What a lush game Killzone2 is. Yep, the sooner I can get my mitts on Killzone3, the better. Or perhaps it’ll be naughty, roughly grab Warhawk, have it’s wicked way, and nine months later, Killhawk, or Warzone, or something else that would describe that most wonderful union.

  12. Good choice, once again..  As long as you havent picked MW2 for first place, that is. ;)   Killzone 2 is one of the best FPS I’ve played in many years (THE best this generation), both single and MP, and with so many GoTY choices, Im glad to see this one did so well.

  13. Brilliant Video but I’m pretty sure i know what number 1 is now ;)

  14. I love KZ2. The game was incredible.  I loved the weightyness, the general gunplay and the visuals are stunning.

I still fail to see how people can say (and genuinly believe) that there are other console games other than UC2 that better this in the eye-feast department.

  15. So that’ll be Uncharted 2 for number 1 then. Can’t see many people at TSA voting for MW2. -__-
