Top Ten PSN Titles In The US

The most popular PSN games in America for 2009.

The US PlayStation Blog has put up the last edition of PULSE for this year, wherein they have revealed the most downloaded games in the US in ‘09:

  1. Battlefield 1943
  2. Fat Princess
  3. Flower
  4. Marvel Vs. Capcom 2
  5. Mortal Kombat II
  6. TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled
  7. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
  8. Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty
  9. Worms
  10. Wheel of Fortune

It’s not surprising that 1943 is at the top, with the massive amounts of hype it generated in the Summer, and with only a few others games to compete with it. Same for Fat Princess. Very nice to see Flower take third place, it certainly deserves it, and I’m sure it will encourage other independent developers out there to try bringing their ideas to the PSN. MvC2 was long-awaited by fans, so no shock there. Mortal Kombat II, now that was definitely unexpected. The game released on the store all the way back in 2007, so it’s simply staggering that 2 years later, it’s still selling strong. The remaining five all clearly sold well since they’re recognised franchises among the American people. It truly is a shame that some of the better PSN games this year didn’t make it , such as the adorable Critter Crunch, the brilliant Braid, the retro-themed Shatter or the realistic Zen Pinball, to name a few. It just goes to show how far the PlayStation Network has gone in terms of providing excellent, pure-quality games. 2010 is going to be a cracker…

  1. Got 4 of those, all of which i doubt will ever get played again. Are there any PSN titles that have any sustainable life in them?

Not for me there isnt, never any more than a couple of weeks before they become tiresome.

    I wonder why?!

    • Warhawk wipeout and tekken 5 give a lot of hours of gaming.

      • Got 2 of those (Wipeout and Tekken) Wipeout i consider a full game(good but not my cup of tea), Tekken, also a full game but is a shoddy representitive of the “beat em up” genre imo.

Infact all next gen “beat em ups” are a bit shit, Soul Calibur is the only one that keeps me coming back for a dose for some reason.

      • how bloody very dare you!! tekken is THE king of iron fist tournament…nuff said!

      • Nah I agree with Roynaldo to be honest. Beat ‘em ups in general are pretty crap and get boring too quickly and Soul Calibur is also the one fighter that does keep me coming back a little bit at least.

    • You know, that’s EXACTLY the same for me! Very few have actually kept me to the end, like Shooter and WipEout HD. Shatter, Flower and Braid were short, one-time experiences really, but very brilliant ones. I feel bad for not finishing some game like Trine, but I think it’s because of:

      1. Time constraints.
      2. The fact that retail games you have left to play are more enjoyable.

Like I honestly would prefer playing AC2 or GoW Collection over Trine, as I just find them more fun. Though Trine is excellent for a PSN game, it’s good for a retail game.

    • If it’s a choice between a PSN game and a full blooded retail release, I’ll pick the retail release every time.
What’s great, though, is when you clearly get your money’s worth from one of these downloaded games.

I played well over 50-60 matches in BF1943, which for £10 is many an hour sunk into it. Same goes for Fat Princess.

Other times, things like Flower and Fl0w aren’t there for a time sink, but for a quality experience that can be rather experimental, and so are worth their weight in completely different ways.

Then there’s disappointing titles like Worms or Lumines Supernova which I shouldn’t have bought because they’re more like handheld titles, I’ve played their predecessors to death, and so haven’t had the play time I thought they might get

But no matter how good the PSN game is, when something like Uncharted 2 or Batman hits, Im going to drop everything and get sucked into the story line in a big way.

      • Totally agree with you mate.

      • I’m kind of the opposite. I’ve gotten bored with a few of the retail releases I’ve bought (GTA IV, Infamous etc…), but I’ve put a ton of time into loads of PSN games. Maybe it’s because I prefer arcade style high score games or something. Plus a lot of PSN games run in 1080p at 60fps which is always nice.

    • While I don’t tend to play PSN games for as long as full reatil games when I first get them, I tend to come back to them a lot more often. Maybe it’s because they are installed on the hard drive and sometimes I’m too lazy to go and change the disk!
I think PSN games are where the fun is for local multiplayer though.

      • ‘There aren’t a lot of retail titles that have offline multiplayer for up to 4 players. That’s where games like Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars and Battle Tanks come in. They’re tons of fun with friends and well worth the cash.

    • Battlefield 1943.

Got it in summer, still play it at least once a week. Fantastic game. :)

  2. I want a discount on Zen Pinball and Braid. They look so fun, but I haven’t got the money to buy them both at full price… I find most of the games on PSN to be overpriced though. Is it just me?

    • Well, only thing you can compare it to is retail games, and while some PSN games can be rather short, they end up being very high-quality experiences which you just can’t get in a retail game, except Uncharted 2 of course :P

  3. Mortal Kombat II has been in the US top 10 since it was released a couple of years ago or whenever, I suspect SFII will be an ever present also.

    • Yeah, it truly is odd how MK is STILL there :S

      • I bought it on the EU PSN, still…its hard to believe that it is STILL there after so long!!

Surely there is some sort of mistake?!

      • It’s been there in almost every chart, I just don’t see how it’s possible :S Maybe people didn’t like the new MK and are attracted by the price point? All I can think of really.

  4. Agree that 1, 3 & 9 are worth a purchase and value for money but the others are not anywhere near the same quality/value.

The US psn store has had different sales promotions to us this year that may account for some games.

    My Top 5 psn games

    1, Gravity Crash
    2, Wipeout HD
    3, Battle Tanks
    4, Super Stardust HD
    5, Flower

    • Can we consider Wipeout a PSN game, I always classed it in the Burnout category of a full (easily blu ray disc) title that for our convienience is downloadable.

      • It is a blu-ray disc game too, don’t ya know? ;) Still, you’re right, it is within that Burnout group.

      • So is R&C quest for booty, but i think we all have enough sense to know that isnt a full game.

      • Yeah, that would definitely go under a PSN game and not under the Burnout grouping.

      • So now we are debating what is classed as a PSN game and what is classed as a retail game? I don’t think we will ever find a neutral and final answer to that.

      • The difference for me is the presence/ absence of a platinum trophy.

    • @Sabreman Now that’s a list I can relate to. Love and own all of those games, except for Gravity Crash which I’m not really familiar with

  5. Totally agree Zuler, where is digger, zen and critter…good be a good omen though, soon be on offer at cheaper prices.

  6. Its selling so well maybe they can give us Mortal Kombat 3? :D but wow I’m really surprised that MK2 is still in the list could be the fact that its retro? if these classics are selling well then were is the rest I’m really disappointed with Sega.

Capcom should consider HD remixing Strider

    • And ghouls n ghosts

      • Yes!! ghost and goblins too!

  7. What the hell were all of you doing up at midnight?

    • We were all bored on Twitter so Zuler kindly put this up for “something to read”.
Turned out to be a good idea.

  8. Some pretty nice titles there, own a few and they’re not to bad. Especially Fat Princess I thought that would be rubbish when I first got it ages ago, but it’s pretty awesome

  9. Zuler why is Braid mentioned in the context of not making the chart? It came out right at the end of the year so there was never likely to make it.

  10. Can we find out what the Japanese top ten for the PSN was? Always good for a cultural shock.

  11. I like PSN games, they offer a different experience to Retail games, and although retail games normally win most of my time I’m often in the mood to kill a bit of time on a PSN title. Not everyone is the same, but I’m the type of person that plays 1 retail game at a time to completion (with the odd exception like LBP), so PSN titles provide a break from getting overload on a single retail game. Flower got me through the stress of getting my KillZone 2 Platinum for example!!!

In general I’ve been happy with the majority of my purchases – like has been said above they either fall into the category of being amazing, memorable and/or unique (if quite short and one off) experiences, or great online experiences, or highly addictive pick up and play experiences that you can keep going back to.

In general I thought £7.99 was pushing it for a lot of $10 games, but now SCEE have readjusted the exchange rate to £6.29 I think they represent great value on the whole (especially if you buy your £20 PSN cards online for £15.95!). I also think Trophies adds to the replayability of some titles which helps a lot – PJ Shooter was short but great fun and a great concept, playing for 100% trophies ensured I replayed a lot of the levels two or three times to find everything, the experience without trophies would have been a lot less satisfying…

I’m loving that SCEE do regular weekly offers now, I’ve spent about £30 on the PSN in the last couple of weeks picking up titles I missed first time around, either because I didn’t have time or didn’t think they justified the price being asked.

As I say I’ve only been disappointed with a small handful of titles that I’ve later regretted buying, ironically I would count Mortal Kombat II as one of them! But that is mainly because I couldn’t get my head around the controls – I played MKII on the Amiga which had a much easier/more fun one-button joystick control scheme!!!

  12. BF1943 was and is brilliant. Could we find out the top 10 for here?

  13. I’m a BIG gamer, and so have a 500GB HDD in my launch model PS3.

I also have a LOT of PSN games.

For me, PSN games offer different experiences to retail games. Things such as Flower, flOw, Battlefield 1943 and Fat Princess are all fantastic games.

God, I have lost so many hours to Shatter. :)

Also, the convenience of them being on the XMB is fantastic, the same as the PSP Go. If I got bored of playing, say, LittleBigPlanet, I can simply boot up something on my HDD, such as Wolfenstein 3D, and have a quick gaming session.

    I love the PSN :)
