Infinity Ward “Took It A Little Too Far”

No Russian still a hot topic, then.

In an interview with Computer and Video Games, the producer for EA’s Army Of Two: 40th Day has said that he feels Infinity Ward took the now infamous (and sadly massively over discussed) ‘No Russian’ scene “a little too far”. “We wouldn’t have done it, we didn’t do it,” said Matt Turner. “For me personally I think the alarm bells went off in a big way on that one because it was out of context. When the footage got leaked thousands upon thousands of people saw it on a clip not knowing what it was”.

“I’m not saying they were overreacting but people were generating these pretty outlandish opinions even though they didn’t know what the scene meant in the grand scheme of the game,” he added. “You’re playing a CIA agent, it’s designed to show the atrocities… it’s pretty awful and if you fail to see that side of it than you’re not getting the whole picture. That being said, I thought it took it a little far; it was pretty out there. But I like seeing that they have guts like that.”

“I say maybe they pushed it too far but in a way that’s a good thing because the media of videogames is very young,” he added. “We have to start pushing limits, making statements and seeing what kind of social and cultural relevance that we can have which hasn’t really been nailed yet. I think the were pushing towards that direction and trying to make people experience something truly terrible. Whether they were successful or not I’ll leave up to the players to decide, but I liked the fact that they were trying something new that people haven’t done before.”

“I think that’s really gutsy and my hat’s off to Infinity Ward for trying at least.”

Thanks, MUKARKAR.

  1. A video game is like life without rules. To be honest, as long as the game is certified correctly, I don’t see the problem in putting pretty much anything into a game. If our ambition is to make games as life-like as possible, then devs can’t keep avoiding the question of “is this too far?”

Yes it may come with a little controversy, but if we can’t get over that, then we’re gonna come to a grinding halt. IW did something great. IW showed other devs that its OK to push the boundaries a little further than all the rest, and although this scene wasn’t put into context quite as good as it could have been, this is what we need.

    Well done IW.

  2. The guys that made Army of Two, a game where a couple of hired mercenaries slaughter Arabs for money and then fist-bump each other, thought that MW2 went too far? Pretty funny.

  3. Wow this again. I think Matt’s answer/opion was really politcally correct. He didn’t offend IW, at some points defending them, but on the same hand he said they took it too far. But IMO he’s an idiot for not expressing his REAL opinion and defend it. In the end it’s a GAME! GET OVER IT.

    • Thank You! That really needed to be said, like an earlier comment said, if it was a movie then it wouldn’t have been that big of an issue as it is with the game. It’s getting taken way out of context then it should be. It’s really just insane how people are reacting to this, and I think that even this one scene has caused so much drama that it has surpassed the amount of drama all of the GTA games had TOGETHER.

      • Agreed…well said sir.

  4. i’m actually surprised this didn’t get more news coverage than it did.
liarra’s blue arse got more news coverage than this.
but then that’s just what you expect from a puritanical country where many don’t consider bearing arms a right but more a duty.
bet this would have got more news coverage in the us if it was either an american airport or if you went round flashing people.
