Non-mandatory Firmware Updates confuse the pants off me. Why are they there when most of the time a month down the line they become mandatory anyway? This appears to be the case with 3.15, which as of last night you’ll need to download and install if you want to get online, according to reports surfacing overnight. Nobody at TSA Towers can confirm this as of this morning as those of us awake had installed 3.15 when it arrived a while back, and those of us asleep would go crazy if I woke them for this.
So, Firmware 3.15 is now required, the main focus of which was to allow PSP Minis to run on the PS3.
Thanks, Bahamut44-4.

If you didn`t know about it, you would have thought it never existed till they made it mandatory

I never installed it as I have no interest in playing minis.

or did I, I didn’t even realise there was an update. They should just make them mandatory, although most the time the break something else.

It would cause less confusion if they were all manatory.

I installed it because I had that sync issue. My controllers would randomly decide to tell me I didnt have a ps3.

Maybe they release it optionally first in case there are unforseen bugs. That way they can use the early adopters as a large scale test and if there are problems, get them ironed out before an update that is required.
Probably mainly for press reasons. If they forced an update that broke something, it would look very bad for them that they forced you to break your console! If it’s optional, the damage is much more limited and gives them the get-out that it was optional (even though we all know thats just BS)

That’s what I was thinking…….although problems should come out in in-house testing beforehand.

I can confirm that you have to download it now to get online. I hadn’t installed 3.15 in the past, don’t ask why not, just didn’t get round to it. Anyway I’m downloading now.

I didn’t bother installing it as I currently don’t want to play minis, I don’t have a bluetooth sync issue, and don’t need to transfer my data to a new PC – I was playing Borderlands all last night until just after midnight and I didn’t get logged out or told to install an update? I will see if it does tonight.
If it has now become mandatory it may be because Sony CS are getting a lot of confused calls from people asking why the mini they bought doesn’t work or why their DS3 controller isn’t syncing properly etc – they probably decided it would just be easier to make everyone get it and have done with it. The only reason it wasn’t made mandatory to start with was probably because it was so soon after the last update and people complain about updates being too frequent, so it makes sense to make them optional whenever possible…

People had problems some models of PS3 in earlier updates (mainly the 2.4 which bricked some ppl console), generating a lot of anger and sues against Sony.
I guess making it non-mandatory for a few weeks makes it easier to control the damage in case something goes wrong. And all those users who update first act as volunteer beta-testers for the new firmware.

loads of updates have included features irrelevant to me. but i still downloaded just incase. they should just have the firmware mandatory all the time and stop confusion.

I like to keep my PS3 updated thus I downloaded this when it was released just for the sake of it really.
All updates may as well be mandatory if they are going to put the effort in and bother creating the updated FW.

Ahh, glad I downloaded and installed this the other day, had I waited until tonight – the servers would be in high-demand and I would be waiting around for *hours*.

I download all the FW updates, mostly because the small things that are added to the PS3 each time one is released. Trophies and In-Game XMB use were my two favorite updates so far,of course!

I like them doing this, as it gives me warning and means I can install it when it suits me (updates are the last thing you want when you switch your PS3 on for a quick blast). A little notification when an update is available would be nice though.

I didn’t actually realise that you couldn’t;t update. If I want to enter the store I thought I had to update if one was available. This could very well just be me though
