A week ago I brought you news that the Beeb was about to enter the gaming arena once more and a quick read through the comments reveals the one title you want: Doctor Who. Just for once the BBC has its finger on the pulse and MCV is reporting an ‘array’ of Doctor Who games on the way.

“We’re having a lot of interesting discussions for a variety of ideas around Doctor Who that are complementary to each rather than in competition with each other – boxed product console games, virtual worlds and other experiences,” explained Dave Anderson, head of multimedia development at BBC Worldwide.

‘Boxed console products’ sounds good, as does the Doctor Who ‘virtual world’. A Tardis and Timelord MMO perhaps?

  1. if they gave it two or so years of development then I’d be excited. No doubt they will rush it out as fast as possible so I am highly sceptical.

  2. Doctor Who MMO and point-n-click adventure games and I am ALL over that. More Top Trumps, and I’m burning my DVDs in protest.

  3. Lame.

    • Thank you for you comments, we appreciate them.

      • Lol sorry it wasn’t against you or TSA. More over BBC/Doctor Who and a game version. I dislike tv and film in to video games as more often than not they are very underwhelming. Probably should have explained myself..

  4. Ah but who is voicing the good doctor ;)

    • Probably be Matt Smith, as they tend to put the current Doctor on the merchandise they release.

      • A game is going to all be about the Doctor and pre-school then.

He so wrong as Doctor, sorry but it going to be so sad when start up again on TV.

  5. Who’s betting on a TARDIS area in Home? and maybe a costume. Or at least the new doctor’s bow tie.

    • pretty good idea actually!

    • I’d buy a TARDIS personal space, just for the hell of it – especially if the transition from your Personal Space to the Home Square was done by way of a cutscene of the TARDIS materialising in the corner of it lol

  6. Could be interesting, if done right, could be horrible if it’s rushed out.

But a TARDIS Home apartment? I think I might be tempted by that. ;)

    • I’d pay fifty dollars for one!

    • YEs I could see myself buying that as well – especially if they made it so you could walk in and its bigger on the inside :)

      • Sounds a bit like my ex in some respects. In fact I’m now changing her name in my phone to ‘the Tardis’!

      • Dave, I think you just won at life.

  7. I think a Torchwood game would be easier to do a good job of. Any game with the Doctor (assuming you play the Doctor) would be really difficult to pull off in terms of feel etc. Then again, maybe the BBC could go to town and get Quantic to make a Doctor Who game in the style of Heavy Rain!

  8. I love Doctor Who, but have no confidence in this whatsoever.

  9. The possibilities are mouth-watering, however I’ve read the games are going to be for the DS, iPhone and such, as the budget for an HD game would be prohibitive. Shame.

    • Actually, I read it on Sixthaxis last week! Now I feel stupid…

      • Indeed – but they seem to expanded on what platforms the will license, “boxed console games” sounds Wii/PS3/Sbox, non?

  10. could turn out quite good. i vote yes.

  11. hmmmmm i do love the Dr but i’m guessing this could be similar to the harry potter games. great license but they can’t pull it off

  12. “virtual worlds” could mean some sort of Doctor Who themed Home space

  13. To deliver something both fans of the series and gamers will love will take a lot of time and money. Not sure if the Beeb will go down this route. Given their current experience of web based content flash etc I have my doubts on this.

  14. Could be interesting I suppose, as long as they put a bit more thought into it then they did with ‘Top Trumps: Doctor Who’ on the Wii!

A Time Lord based MMO could work but I doubt the BBC would be that ambitious, then there is a question of which Doctor they use – the new one is unproven and Tennant is still good for a quick cash-in, imagine all those DW fans letting poor old Wilf die in the game so Tennant doesn’t have to regenerate!

I’m not sure how they would handle it in a game – the whole Regeneration aspect could make for an interesting gameplay mechanic, but then they couldn’t very well regenerate the Doctor if they are basing it on the current actor. They could maybe do an ‘alternate-reality’ Doctor or maybe a different Time Lord or something that ends up work with the Doctor. Or to really pander to the long term fans you could start off as William Hartnell and slowly regenerate your way up to the new guy as you progress through the game.

Eitherway there’s got to be a regeneration in there somewhere along the line if you end up loosing too much health during the game!

    • Speaking of good gaming mechanics, using the TARDIS to transition between levels must be a given surely?

  15. Can’t say that the idea excites me all that much.
Doctor Who can be great, but I don’t know how they would actually get that universe into a game and still make it fun without divulging into a series of crap family mini-games that cash in on the shit Wii game success.
