Cross-game chat – a rumour that’ll never die, especially when Sony themselves confirm it’s coming. Remember when SCEE’s James Thorpe said that he wished he “could just give you a date” when pushed on the matter? “Trust me when I say that as soon as I hear from ‘up top’ I will be shouting about it and making myself the most popular person on the blog,” he said on the EU Blog.
Well, it appears the Official PlayStation Magazine (US) is getting in on the act too – in a feature in the latest issue centred on the PS3′s upcoming technology. “Aside from the 3D goodness,” states the magazine, “cross-game party chat is the obvious ‘next big feature,’ even though it might be restricted to paid [PSN] subscribers.”
Ah, that old chestnut again. “Sony’s current service is one of the PS3’s best features, so we’d begrudgingly welcome a revamped PSN with extra subscriber functionality, like cross-game-chat and exclusive PSN downloads,” the magazine repeats. Either they know something the rest of us don’t, or they’re reporting on the same “PSN Premium” questionnaire we’ve all seen a dozen times.
For what it’s worth, we’ll fire SCEE a quick email. I’m sure they’ll be delighted.

Why cant they just come out and say either way what is happening with this feature. All this cloak and dagger bull.

Gotta say, this CGC nonsense is really starting to piss me off. The community out there want it as a feature and Sony could at least let people know what’s happening. It’s not like they’ve got the edge/jump on MS on this one. It’s a catch-up feature for Christ’s sake. Then we can finally stop reporting about it.

Well that’s one premium service that won’t be convincing me to part with my money. I’d like cross game chat to be available but I really doubt I’d use it much so certainly won’t be paying for it.

And even if you did, what are the chances that the person you’d like to talk to would pay for the service as well?

I think my opinions on premium PSN have been out there for a while and this doesn’t change much for me. I have been happily gaming for almost 3 years on my PS3 now without the feature so do I really really need it, I think not. Although many disagree with me

I think a hell of a lot of people would be disappointed and upset if sony introduce a paid-for psn service. One of the main selling points and advantages over the 360 is the free psn, would generate a hell of a lot of negative publicity. I know they’re talking about keeping the current network free and introducing extra paid-for content but that’s besides the point. It’s already the most expensive console on the market, why make us pay even more? All this would do is put people off the ps3. Really hope this doesn’t happen, though i know in one way or another it will.

erm, they’re not. You want it, you pay for it. You don’t want it, you don’t pay for it.
As long as what we currently have remains free, then i’m not bothered. Will be interested to see what this subscription service amounts to though.

I bought an elite 360 Christmas just gone and I have spent more on getting that working the way I want it to than I did on my launch ps3, connect and charge controllers, hdmi adaptor (so I can use optical out) wifi adaptor and a bigger hard disc well and truly bump up the cost.
I’d happily pay for premium psn if I was pleased with the feature set, as I voted yesterday though, I couldn’t give a monkeys about cross game chat though.

Ok, so i used the word make instead of what i should’ve said which is encourage. Cross game chat wont cost sony any extra to run, so why should we pay for it? I just think they’re missing a trick with this, if they include all these extras for free, they’ve got a really good selling point.

The trouble is, they don’t make much effort to advertise all the selling points the PS3 already boasts, if I were a Sony marketing exec for the day I’d list all the things I’ve mentioned above about the 360 and get some adverts knocked up comparing the two like Burger King used to with their size comaprison things between the Whopper and the Big Mac.
Okay, maybe that might take more than 24 hours in Sony’s marketing department.

The way PSN is right now will stay free, the premium service is rumoured to include cross game chat, access to early beta’s continuous play and more.
All for £69.99 a year. Not bad when you consider CP is £60 a year anyway.

Awesome stuff, can’t wait to see what other benefits there are of the Premium PSN, although I couldn’t give a rats ass for CGC

snap ! Just looked at the table again, looks like Option 1 is best for me, although for the price they charge, I would probably want everything on it for £50 a year.

Not really fussed about x game chat to be honest. I know alot of people want it, but for me, it’s not worth paying extra for. I would happily pay for beta access and online storage though.

Even though I want Cross game chat if this becomes a premium service then I’ll stick with skype as it works and is free. Cross game chat should really be free otherwise whats the point if you have it and your mate doesn’t?

The big sticking point I guess is what if your pals didn’t upgrade to premium ,would you still be able to cross chat? Sony should really make this a free feature so everyone can use it,otherwise it could be a broken mess.
Also if it was a paid feature,a lot of hardcore fans Inc myself would be alittle annoyed as we have constantly asked for this since 2007,and if they have been holding off releasing until premium psn, then thats harsh.
Anyways I think it will be free, naughty dog let slip it done last October,so I’m assuming it will be in our first firmware update of 2010 ( maybe at GDC in a few weeks )
