I understand why Sony don’t give out dates for their AAA games, because when they invariably slip, the internet gets mad and people start tipping over magazine racks.  Gran Turismo 5, though, should not only have a date set in stone but the bloody thing should be already out and in my hands.  In fact, I should have already finished the damned thing and be looking forward to GT 6.

Sadly, though, that’s not the case, and whilst Forza 3 might satisfy me short-term, I’m looking to Polyphony to give its fans the best racing game ever created.  Doing so, it seems, takes time, and although this time last year we were looking at a Christmas 2009 release, we’re now, according to a spokesperson overheard at GDC, looking at October 2010.  Of course, things could change.

Despite Sony’s next big thing – 3D – being out in June, GT 5 is widely expected to be the poster child of what’s possible with the technology.  With the firmware updating to the HDMI 1.4 profile being in the next few months (June 10th, remember?) the boffins at Polyphony will have had plenty of time to get their heads around the 3D space, if of course they haven’t already.  I’d better get saving for a new TV.

  1. As long as it comes out this year I really dont mind. We’ve waited so long and I beleive it will be the best driving/racing/sim we have ever seen.
Fingers crossed its sooner rather than later but a confirmation of this year is good.

    • me too I think it will be something special when we finally get are hands on it.

    • Yea, its off my list until i see it on the shop shelf! LOADS of other games for me to buy anyways…

I still think the game is done and ready, Sony just want to use it top shift PS3 unit sales for xmas! The 3D part was being demoed, plus all the other features they have added have all been seen. The team are just making hype videos from now until xmas! It’s all business.

  2. I’ve resigned myself to just waiting for it to come out now, it’s off my ‘excited for list’ and won’t be back on there until the day it’s out. That way I save myself a hell of a lot of frustration each time they push it back. (I’m still secretly really excited)

    • I know what you mean. I just get the awful feeling its going to be a massive let down after all this time…

      • thing is, we (TSAer’s and other web forum users)are such a small part of the user base. the general public have no idea about the delays. One of my mates down the gym loves GT, but all he knows is its being built…and its been delayed once.lol. so most people will be happy with all the features and just enjoy the game.

  3. OK so they stalled to add weather, then to add damage, then to add head tracking and now to add 3D. That’s an impressive list of features, but I keep feeling that they’ll keep adding features. This is feature creep to the extreme and someone needs to get it under control

    • they delayed the game to add weather? shouldnt it be on thier top priority list when developing the game since they wanted to make it realistic. bunch of cowboys me thinks.

      • You don’t know much about Gran Turismo or Polyphony Digital do you?

    • Sound alot like Duke Nukem Forever and we all know what happened there………

    • Completely agree. Don’t worry about 3D. Simply get a stunning game out for the fans/masses and then look to see what the rest of the gaming world does with 3D. Hell, in tech-hungry Japan, they’re looking at roughing 10% of TV sets being 3D from now until next year. Hardly invasive and it strikes me that GT5 needs to concentrate on the basics or it’ll loose everyone’s respect.

    • At this point, I don’t really mind that much, I just want it to be able to match up against the Forza series*, and if that means that they need to delay it to add features, I’m actually all for it. Hell, where’s my decal/replay/track editor Polyphony?

      * = I actually own a 360, so this isn’t really coming from the fanboy in me, it’s more that the GT will always be gaming royalty to me and should at least fight to stay top dog.

  4. Getting a firm date (or at least a month as in this case) is good only because, in my memory, that reduces the slippage scale. When it’s ‘out in 2009′ a slip is an entire year. Then it’s ‘Q1′ and slips to Q3 or 4 but when it’s ‘October’ it will hopefully reduce slippage to November or December.

Does anyone really believe it will come out in October?

    • I never thought of it like that, but that could explain why I was so damn annoyed.

    • I’ll beleive it’s going to be released in October (or Nov, Dec)when I receive a text telling me the game has been posted.

  5. There’s been a lot of chatter about GT5 lately. Part of me wonders/hopes it might indicate a release date in the near future like June. However it’s the same part of me that wonders/hopes Cheryl Cole will be waiting for me in bed tonight, so I’m probably being too optimistic!

    • If you’re Ashley Cole I wouldn’t hold your breath. ;)

  6. To Jas-N (when [s]he sees this) – Looks like you win the bet! No matter which way it’s interpreted! Damn it :-)

    • Makes me wonder what kinds of odds a genuine bookmaker would give on it being released this year.

    • Ha, I thought “I Won” (the bet) when I read this. Could of won me a £1, PAH!.
Oh and BTW I’m male, the hyphen (-) replaces the ‘o’ in Jason, hence the lower case ‘n’ too. ;)

  7. Uh, you can’t update the HDMI to 1.4, that’s a hardware thing…
What Sony can do is update the firmware to enable the various forms of 3D that HDMI 1.3 can support.

    • Actually the only hardware difference that’s involved is the Ethernet over HDMI (and 3D-1080p, not 1080i) which is in the devices, everything else can be achieved via a software update for the HDMI controller.
Of course you might have to upgrade your HDMI cable to a more powerful one, but that’s only £20 at the max.

  8. Were they not aiming for October 2009 as well?

  9. Test Drive 2 will land before GT.
