On the shelf under my television, nestled between a Sixaxis docking station and Pandora’s Box from the GoW Trilogy Edition, lie 14 games. 14 Games that will soon be visiting the great trade-in center in the sky and all because I didn’t backup my saved data.
If you don’t already know, about 2 months ago my PS3 Slim decided it was going to imitate the careers of many an X Factor winner and die. It wasn’t even 6 months old and I hadn’t even thought of backing it up; a procedure that I used to do all the time with my 60GB launch. A month went by without me even plugging my replacement console in, let alone play anything. Then Abe’s Odyssey launched on the PSN and I bought, played and completed that but have once again found myself with another couple of weeks without any gaming; although this is all due to change thanks to ModNation and Red Dead Redemption.
I literally lost a massive amount of my enthusiasm for games once I lost all my data. Nothing new and exciting was around and having completed GoW III on Titan mode, Uncharted 2 on Crushing, R&C: ACiT to 100% and near-on perfecting a couple of other titles, too, I had no desire to go through everything again in order to get back to where I left off. Imagine losing all of your collected items on LittleBigPlanet, for example…think about it…it destroys the appeal of the game, doesn’t it?
This got me thinking…Why hasn’t backing up been made a lot easier? I realise it isn’t actually a hard thing to do but there are lots of people out there that aren’t even aware of the risk and there are probably others that have no idea how to go about making backups.
I’m sure there are many of you out there that have experienced something similar. How did you feel?
Surely we live in a day and age where online backups aren’t difficult or troublesome to provide? Heck, I would settle for a reminder screen every now and then to let me know when I last backed up. What are your thoughts on the whole backup situation and what do you think could be done to improve upon the current way of doing things?
