PS4 Vid? It’s Not From SCE.

Only a crazy person would have thought Sony were teasing the PS4 in this video, but a few of us did at least think it was from Sony, and was teasing 3D.  After all, the production values were incredible and the timing was just about right.

It’s fake, though.  At least, it’s not from SCE, as Sony hardware PR representative Al de Leon confirmed to Game Informer. “I can confirm that this video is not from SCE,” said de Leon.

That hasn’t stopped SCElabs from retaining their YouTube presence, mind, with two videos up there proudly claiming the videos are not only ‘leaked’ but are also explicitly based on the ‘PS4’, with at least one YouTube reader thinking the whole thing is authentic.

  1. I know I should probably look at said videos but surely Sony wouldn’t want to distract everyone from the PS3. Especially as it’s now hitting full stride.

    Makes me feel that anything PS4 related (other than discussions and the odd bit of text here and there) would simply be fake.

    • It could just be something waaay less intricate than people are reading into to.lol…take a look at the videos. What im getting from them is 3D gaming being tested and tried out. going wrong the 1st time, so badly the man falls over laughing, and the 2nd its so real hes in the game. Then it just says PS4 now testing, so they are testing a feature, experimenting if you will. It dosent say they are developing a PS4, just implies what they are doing will be part of a PS4. Plus the fact its got the orginal boot up music from the PS3 at the end seems to say they have been experimenting PS4 ideas on the PS3. Gives Sony a nice marketing ploy of ‘living the future’… instead of ‘This is living’. Also, showing that its been in testing and they are confident it will make the PS4 as 3D is here to stay, and not just a gimick.

      Just my 2cents, probably way off what everyone else thinks, but a diffrent point of view.lol

    • Agreed, nothing even resembling a PS4 will come out of Sony for at least another 4 years. Possibly 6 more likely 7 years into the PS3 life cycle would be about the time of the PS4 release. That puts my esitmate around 2013/14.
      The most work Sony will have done on this is to maybe have set a Cad Designer on to it for concepts and scribed a list of possible/hopeful specifications

      • So late? the xbox360 is already getting old, and natal will expand its lifespam for about two years max, so i expect a new machine from microsoft the latest in 2012.
        I dont think sony wants to repeat the mistake of selling their new machine a year and half later than their main rival.

        Id say 2012 for both new machines.

      • id say they will start developing the PS4 in 2012, and release it in 2015/2016. They will want to fully grasp the PS3 with developers, then maybe make the PS4 along the same line as a PS3 but with more power. No steep learning curve for making games will be a must.

      • Agreed. I think this is the first time where we’ll see the lifecycle slowing down a bit. Both companies are keen to make the money back on their investments and it’s only just happening now. Unless, obviously, things become exponential over the coming 24 months but are MS and Sony even finalising designs yet?

      • Does anyone really thinks that Sony are not ALREADY developing the PS4?

      • Developing it, yes. But final hardware specs might still be a bit fluid right now. Do they need to set-up a new fabrication plant this time around?

      • I cant see Sony meeting a deadline anywhere near 2012. I could agree with Bajer about 15/16 though, by then the PS3 will be 8-9 years into it’s lifecycle and the technology around us will have advanced enough to make it viable for a new console.
        I could possibly see MS releasing an earlier console because the xBox is slowly but surely falling behind with what new tech it can incorporate into a current machine via firmware. Sony have had no issue so far with not being able to incorpoate new tech, 3D as a good example.

      • @djhsecondnature oh they are definitely working on it, they’ll have a team sounding out what the future holds and if they don’t then they really should but its literally like conceptual CAD images and a long list of possible tech inclusions I reckon

      • It might happen a lot sooner than you think. Demand for higher frame rates, better looking graphics, and now the advent of 3D which pushes the hardware even harder… Sony might need to launch a PS4 even sooner to keep up with hardware requirements???

      • That’d be right if there was only sony developing videogames, but they have to take into account the release of the next xbox, which will certainly be not that late.

        2015? No way, if so, sony has already lost nextgen battle! The first gamming plattaform gets a big edge over the next one (as we’ve seen this gen) so im sure they dont want to be late this time.

        In fact, i think right now MS is the one “marking the tempo”. (im sure thats not how you say it)

      • As it stand I don’t think MS will be releasing a console anytime soon either. Although it is slowly falling behind in the tech race but what new tech could they add to a newer console that Sony wouldn’t be able to match with firmware at this moment in time. Probably in a couple of years this will be different, hope so anyway!

      • I predict that Sony have the PlayStation 4 already pretty much designed… they would want to hold out with the PS3 for as long as they can, as really, it could go for another 4/5 years. If MS announce the Xbox 3 though, then Sony will have to move. They won’t want to be playing catch-up again.

      • I think they’ll have 80% of the hardware pretty much sewn up with regards to who’s manufacturing what, etc.

        @DAZ – Who’s demanding higher framerates and better graphics? Definitely not 90% of consumers. They’re happy being fed what they deem as a good game. The only situation Sony needs to deal with is to compete with Nintendo, Microsoft and claim market dominance. These means game sales and money.

        When it comes down to it, most gamers aren’t really worried about a slightly slower frame-rate, or better graphics. We’re not the typical demographic here.

      • Developers and publishers can’t afford to make more impressive games as it is, sure there could be a super-ps3 which can actually run games at 1080p60 instead of struggling to do 720p30 (without an inordinate amount of money & time being spent on the engine) but I don’t think customers will go for an incremental upgrade

        The next TV evolution is 4K (approx 4 x HD resolution, although 4K measures the horizontal resolution, rather than the current 1080 measuring vertical) as long as TV manufacturers don’t mess about with the pointless 2K

        These 4K TVs are expected to be landing more rapidly in store shelves by 2015 although Panasonic released a 4K 3DTV earlier this week, although at 152″ it costs $500,000 which you can see here.

        And it will be a long, long time before computers are capable of running games made in 4K and that is truely the next generation. Also 4K may struggle to gain traction in gaming where everything is referenced against the PC market where 20″ish screens are the norm. So we’ll have to wait for the movie market to push this

      • I couldn’t care less about increased resolution. I’d just be happy with all games running in 1080p and 60 frames per second with decent anti-aliasing.

      I was thinking more along the lines of 3D pushing the hardware not the gamers. (my bad). 3D does require a lot of horsepower (or certainly used too), and its that that might be a let down. Killzone 2 is a sweet looking and playing game now, but in 3D, something might well be sacrifced to increase performance, hence the idea that maybe a PS4 is not that far away.
      BUT thinking about it, the CELL is scalable, so maybe a new PS3 rather than a PS4 is needed? PS3.5 with another CELL processor? Something that should be able to increase performance, frame rates and it would only require minor code changes.

      • If Sony had their way they’d be having us buying their hardware every few years (ok, ignoring the console as that’s a loss leader).

        I see 3D gaming as a distraction as we’ve not even got 2D gaming even remotely correct yet (from a technical standpoint) but of course, Sony want to make money on the TVs and also have a Unique Selling Point so they can allegedly stand out from the likes of MS and Nintendo.

    • They’re not crappy. They convinced a lot of people it was made by Sony. Watch the most recent one. It has pretty high production values.

      • That’s a good point actually. Perhaps this was the point. Some students that can now go to potential investors and say “we made a film so convincing, look at all the people/blogs/news sites that thought it might be real”

  5. If it were real why would they post the videos named ‘Leaked…vid’? Why not just name them without the ‘Leaked…’? in the name? Or is this real and Sony are trying to stir up some viral advertising? …and I’ve just bought in to it hook, line and sinker.

  6. The newer vid didn’t even have a 3D tv in it. It was an old Sony X series HDTV. Hence the cinema 3D glasses. Lol

    • Lol. I didn’t notice that. That kinda puts my whole theory below to shame then. :P

  7. The newest trailer they have up looks so well-made! They’ve got MW2 in 3D on a big Sony screen. The guy’s wearing Sony headphones. The acting’s fairly good. It’s professionally lit. It’s all about 3D though and doesn’t really mention anything about PS4 apart from it somehow has MW2 in 3D.

    Just because Sony deny something, doesn’t mean that it’s not true. They always deny things then announce them a week later. Maybe PS4 isn’t a whole new console. Maybe they’re just massively changing the software, experience and look of the PS3 and calling it the PS4 to massively hype it up.

    They’ve been announcing many of the games we thought they would be announcing at the conference. Maybe it’s not just to get people talking about PS3 before E3. Maybe it’s about getting the games out of the way so that they can give most of the limelight to PS4

    • Also. At the bottom of the screen at the end it says “PS4 v4.0”. It might be all about FW 4.0.

        So what it is is the experiment went wrong in v3.1, but once v4.0 was being tested on it worked perfectly

        So is this FWv4.0? will v4.0 make all games 3D?

      • I like your thinking. That would be pretty awesome and I think it would push a lot of people to go 3D. I don’t know how possible it is though. Imagine that 3D will become the next HD and despite the general talk of it being a gimmick, I reckon almost every TV being sold in 4/5 years will have 3D as standard.

      • Yup, exactly the same as HD, where people who’d only just bought a massive 32″ CRT said they didn’t see any point in higher resolution, and they couldn’t tell the difference and all the usual bullshit to try and justify their weirdly late entry to bigger screen TVs

  8. Sony have too much at stake trying to turn billions of loss on the PS3 into a profit to mess about with it. Yep, they’re working on a PS4 in an underground bunker somewhere in remote Japan it’ll be suicide not to, however the perception behind these ads is that the 3D will seem so different it will make the PS3 seem like a new console.

    We know this is going to to be Microsoft’s push with Natal, that it is something so revolutionary it will actually be a new console, so this was thought to be Sony doing the same with 3D.

    If the vids aren’t from SCE, who could they be from?
