According to French site GameBlog.fr, Nintendo’s next console will be dubbed “Wii Hi-Fi” (not Wii HD) and is set for a reveal during the company’s E3 conference next week.
We don’t normally cover Nintendo consoles here on TSA, but claims from the French site that the new machine will reach Xbox 360 levels of visuals make a very clear ping on our radars.
Here’s what GameBlog.fr are citing (albeit translated into English) as the main differences between the Wii and whatever the follow-up will be:
Naturally, this is all hearsay and rumours just now, we’ve certainly not heard anything on this ourselves but if it’s true it’s basically what we’d expect Nintendo to do next, anyway.
Hopes are high for the big reveal of a new Zelda title from the Japanese company next week.

Just to let you know, I think hifi has a different meaning in French. They call a games console a “meuble hi-fi” (hi-fi furniture literally – don’t know why). But that seems to be quite a French-language orientated name for a Japanese/International console.
Sounds a bit fishy.

http://www.wordreference.com/fren/hifi – for the translation. Fantastic translation site if you need something a bit more accurate for specific words/phrases.

Unless by console it means something else like a cabinet. That makes more sense and in which case I’m completely wrong. Whoops. (Still a rubbish name)

so in french Hi-fi mean Tv, Radio or Game console. So the direct translation would be electronic device?

Yeah pretty much. They also say it’s just a code name and will probably not be the console’s final name.
Sorry for apamming the comments btw.

If you say Wii Hi-Fi with a french accent you get Wii Hii-Fii ;)

Has there ever been a reveal of both a company’s home and handheld consoles in one show?

I’m doubting this.

maybe they’re calling it that because they’re finally making a machine that will play audio cds.

Nope, never, no way. They might launch a Wii 2 / HD in late 2011, though I find it more realistic it will be in 2012. But they wil never announce it this early, not when they have games like Metroid: Other M, Zelda and properly one or two more big titles (Pikmin 3 & New Super Mario Bros. Wii 2) for the current Wii on it’s way.

Dubious, I think. Especially with the release of such high profile games e.g. Galaxy 2 and upcoming big hitters, which will probably shift a few units, I don’t think they would want to burn so many people by releasing a new one now.
But we’ll see!

Not keen on the name, we’ll have to see what happens at E3 I suppose!
