Square Enix have confirmed there are no plans for a 360 version of online MMO Final Fantasy XIV. Senior vice president of software development Hiromichi Tanaka said,

“Currently there are no plans for a version for the XBox 360.”

So there you go, no plans for a 360 version. Anything you would like to add Mr. Tanaka?

“We are still talking with Microsoft about an XBox 360 version.”

Right, thanks for that. Once he had stopped contradicting himself, Hiromichi Tanaka revealed the PS3 and PC versions of FFXIV will be identical.

“Because Final Fantasy XIV is designed as a cross-platform MMO, there is no difference between the PC version and the PS3 version.

“We believe that previous attempts to bring MMOs to consoles have been unsuccessful because they focused too much on adapting their style to suit that audience and they lost the feel of a true MMO. Therefore, regardless of the platform, we are aiming to produce a real MMO with Final Fantasy XIV.”

There may also be a chance of PlayStation Move being supported within the MMO.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t had chance to try it out yet but we’ve heard very interesting things about it and we’d like to look at supporting it in Final Fantasy XIV, if we get the chance to do so. However, at the moment I would say that there are no current plans.”

I had a chance to question Hiromichi Tanaka* and asked him about the rumours of a special edition of FFXIV. The rumour is Angeline Jolie personal delivers a copy of the game, encased in a genetically modified pineapple. She will drive up to  your house in a sleigh pulled by tigers and bears, then the sleigh will transform into Optimus Prime and he, Angelina and the assembled bears and tigers will perform “I’m In The Mood For Dancing” by the Nolan Sisters.

“I would say that there are no current plans,” said Tanaka.**

To summarize, there are no current plans for anything related to Final Fantasy XIV; however that may change in the future. Thank you for wasting at least sixty seconds of your life reading this non-news brought to you by TheSixthAxis and Square Enix.***

* No I did not.
** He did not say this.
*** Seriously, thank you, I got half way through writing this piece before I realised that Square Enix had said nothing at all, so had to make up some crap about pineapples and The Nolan Sisters to try and make it worthwhile.

  3. cross platform MMO… i didnt think we would see PS3 and 360 owners on the same screen this gen! If/when the 360 version gets confirmed, it might see the start of online gaming cross platform!

    • Portal 2 will allow PS3 and PC users to play against eah other via Steam appaz.

      • And PS3 players will get owned by PCs ones…. mouse+keyboard > DualShock 3 for FPS.

      • They’ll get owned? Uh, it’s co-op, so they’re working together…. No pwnage of anyone but Glados.

      • Move will act like a mouse if they add it…might balance it out, or even make the PS3 users better as its quicker than moving mouse, like pointing finger. (according to reviews iv heard on podcasts)

      • Only co-op? ok, then its no big deal.

But who knows, they might include a deathmatch mode! You know, sinlge/co-op games are soo 2009!

Move might balance things out, if its not too “laggy”

      • Laggy?? Move isn’t Kinect my friend.

      • I dont think that DS3 players would necessarily get owned – if it wasn’t co-op. It’s all down to adaption, when I started playing FPS’s on the PS3 I sucked at aiming. Now I consider myself pretty good. If I’m getting owned it’s damned not because I aim bad..

    • Weird that for FFXI it was possible to have PS2, PC and XBox360 players playing on the same servers at the same time. What am I missing?

      • I think because they were that – the same server via the internet. PSN and Xbox servers for games are on closed systems.

      • So what’s the problem this time around? They will use Square-Enix PlayOnline servers again, right? Please don’t let Sony host PSN Servers for FFXIV…

  4. And you even forgot to mention his non-commital statements about 3D support! Well, they do say no news is good news.

  5. I’m sure it’ll end up on 360 at some point, was genuinely expecting them to announce at E3 that it would arrive the same time as the PS3 and PC versions. Didn’t FFXI appear on 360? Seems if they could get that one on, then you’d think MS would be bending over backwards to accommodate XIV as well so Sony aren’t getting the exclusive.

    • just came to me, but maybe MS dosen’t want any of there users going online to other servers with other non 360 machines…may lead to piracy of the game as it wont need to connect to live. perhaps. Im not sure how LIVE works

  6. The asterisks helped make the article. Top stuff, tc.

  7. You can always tell Tuffcub writes the article by the asterisks! Love it.

But seriously what a stupid thing to say, there are no plans for a 360 version but theyre talking to MS about it? Well then I’d definately say you have plans.

  8. I’m liking the asterisks too, reminds me of Terry Pratchett books.
I didn’t look at the start to see who wrote the article, but mentioning the Nolan Sisters gave it away :b
I’m not sure about this game, i think FFXIII has put me off FF for life.
Did any of the FF games tie into The Spirits Within movie? I liked that.

  9. FFXIV looked unappealing before FFXIII pretty much shat what little goodwill the franchise had left away for home console owners(Handheld FF offerings seem to fare much better these days).

MMOs aren’t really my thing, and not just because of subscription fees. If I was ever likely to bother with one though, it’d be the nice looking DC Universe one, which looks a lot more fun than FFXIV does.
