Three of Ubisoft’s future AAA titles are being developed on the PS3 as lead platform. You may have noticed during the EA conference how it was the PS3’s DualShock controller that featured prominently, a shift away from previous demonstrations in the past when the Xbox 360 console more often than was not shown as the device powering furtive glimpses of upcoming titles. It appears now that Ubisoft have also followed suit with the switch, with Driver: San Francisco, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier all demoed at their booth at E3 using PlayStation 3 hardware.
When asked by NowGamer what the rationale behind the newfound affection for Sony’s console was, the answer was clear: all three games are being developed first on the PS3. Prying further, one particular Ubisoft representative went so far as to claim that developers would “be mad to do things the other way around”.
The problems of leading game development on the Xbox 360 and then porting to the PS3 have been well documented, but it’s interesting nonetheless to see yet another big publisher come out and publicly embrace the switch. The good news is that, ultimately, such a decision will lead to a superior product on both platforms, with developers admitting in the past how the challenges faced making a game first on the PS3 often results in cleaner, tighter and more optimised code when it comes to creating the 360 version.

How refreshing, well done Ubisoft.
This may /seem/ like a kick in the teeth to Microsoft but your last paragraph makes it clear that it’s not.

about time! now hopefully we can get bigger, more detailed games. Then cut stuff for the 360. It annoys the hell out of me that i can put GOW3 or UC2 in my PS3 and get blown away, then put RDR in and think its ok, but not as good as the 360.

How long till we have PS3 versions that are actually better than 360 ones? For a 599 system released one year later you kinda expect that. Yeah I know about FFXIII, but that’s a very rare exception. Spank those SPUs multiplat devs!

It’s about bloody time, people have been saying since the console launched that if you want to make your life easier in the long run and make the overall game look better and be more consistent across platforms you should lead on PS3 and port to 360…
Why has it taken so long for them to get the message? Maybe they finally feel they have enough skill in PS3 development for it not to slow them up at the front end of development?
Have we finally seen the death of the bad PS3 port, was Bayonetta the final example of shoddy PS3 development? Let’s hope so…

Harking back to my days coding mainframe Assembler 370xa, the words “cleaner, tighter and more optimised code” are music to my ears.

Sony seem to be really reaching out to the third parties and strengthening their relationships with them lately. Convincing them to lead on PS3 and in cases like EA and Ubi deliver some PS3 exclusive content. I like this newer, more confident Sony
