Despite our 8/10 review for Alpha Protocol, many journalists dismissed the game and as a result, sales were lower than expected for publisher Sega.  Speaking to CVG, Sega West president Mike Hayes said “the game hasn’t sold what we’ve expected, therefore we won’t be doing a sequel.”

“The concept was brilliant, though,” he said. “You know this whole thing with Metacritic where you have to be in the high 70s to mid-80s minimum – well, with RPGs you have got to be in the late 80s. Whilst we had a good game, I don’t think we had a game that had enough to get us to that upper echelon and I think that was the issue.”

“Again, the amount you need to invest to get there is so large because RPGs are naturally big projects. We’ve decided we won’t do a sequel.”

Our review asked you to “think a little deeper about whether average graphics and niggles with the cover system are deal-breakers,” something that not a lot of reviewers did. “For me,” said Katy, “the versatility of the story, the way the flow of the game can be altered and the fact it kept me interested enough to finish it and then play it again far outweighed any issues I had with the controls.”

  1. You know what, I really do like AP. It’s nowhere near perfect, it doesn’t look the best graphically, but it’s got style and class and some real RPG aspects to it. The story is deep and absorbing and the combat is fairly good. The customisation options as well are deep amd stat-heavy, for maths geeks.
I think people have too much high expectations of this-gen games that they all need to be graphically spectacular to be worth anything. I even saw someone comment that it’s last-gen graphics, which was a bit harsh I think.

  3. No surprise there..giving the reception it got.
I Hope Obsidian Entertainment do a better job with DS3, and the fortcoming Fallout Las Vegas. Lately they seem to have great games on the table but in reality when released they are bugged as hell; or the mechanics don’t work as they should

  4. I say good. AP was and is a broken game. I’m fine with the graphics, but nothing in the game works together with anything else in the game. My biggest complaint is you try to play the stealth approach, but the stealth mechanic doesn’t work until you get to turn invincible, and that’s just a lazy approach to stealth gameplay. A RPG should let you feel like a God once you level up, not finally feeling “normal” buy getting a headshot without the help of a cool down timer. Sega really halfed assed everything in AP, nothing feels finished. The game really isn’t good enough to warrant a second attempt, nor is Sega a good enough dev to be allowed to try again.
