Street Fighter X Tekken “Two Years Away”

Were you a-hootin’ and a-hollerin’ like the crowd at Comic-con at that footage of Ryu getting kicked into the sun by Tekken’s Kazama? Are you putting your thumbs through rigorous quarter and half-circle digit-gymnastics in preparation of not just Street Fighter X Tekken but its fellow cross-over mash-up Tekken X Street Fighter? Stand down hadoken-junkie, the games are years away.

Development literally only started a couple of months ago, with a tentative release date of both games sometime in 2012. Capcom do intend, however, to have their version released before the Namco Tekken-centric flavour.

Further details have appeared about the games over at Andriasang. Reporting on a Famitsu.com story, apparently the project is only possible due to the friendship between Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono and Capcom CEO Haruhiro Tsujimoto. Ono took the idea to the studio head and they then went straight to the heads of Namco. Since then, there have been no stumbling blocks getting the game(s) green-lit.

It was also stressed how the games are being developed completely separately. There is no sharing of designs or information between the teams. In fact, Ono joked that each game could make the other’s female protagonists naked and the other company wouldn’t even know until the end of development. There’s also a great deal of competition between the two teams, Ono confirming that they’ll be keeping a close eye on sales and scores to see whose version is deemed superior.

Here’s the announcement trailer in case you’ve missed it.

  1. Im gonna get the Capcom version first…

I know it sounds strange, but I imagine the Capcom version will free up the Tekken characters, whilst I think the Tekken version would take the fluidity away from the Capcom characters…

It will however be real cool to play the these games in their alternative realms….

    Capcom version FTW :-)

  2. Two years away? Why?! They’re reusing engines and as it’s only Street Fighter and Tekken characters each of the games can re-use models for their own characters from their newest release. Yes obviously they need to create the models and movesets for characters from the other game, as well as the tag team ultras and balancing but two years does still seem a little extreme.

  3. MvC3 2011, BlazBlue: CS October 2010, Mortal Kombat TBA 2011. Next year is not good for a SF X Tekken release or Tekken X SF, so why not 2012.

  4. @shakugan – Of those titles you named. MvC is the only one with a shred of hope of causing problems for street fighter and tekken. They are the two biggest fighting game franchises. MK hasn’t been good in years and the sales reflect that, and Blazblue isn’t mainstream enough to even make a dent. So rather than next year not being good for SFXT, I’d say it’s lucky for the others that they’re not releasing until 2012!

    • I think the new MK may do a lot better. It sounds like it’s a complete overhaul of the game, something denoted by it being simply being titled Mortal Kombat. People sounded genuinely excited about what was shown at E3.
