Lara’s Exclusive 360 Release ‘Incomplete’

Xbox 360 owners may get to play The Guardian of Light earlier than their PS3 and PC counterparts but the release may not be all they were hoping for. Online co-op, leaderboard support and voice chat features are going to arrive with a free update on September 28, over a whole month after release.

This also happens to be the day that The Guardian of Light is released on the PlayStation Network and Steam.

Karl Stewart, Crystal Dynamics global brand director, has explained the decision. “We made a decision recently because we were focusing on how we can deliver the best possible experience to the players. If we had launched with online co-op, we wouldn’t feel comfortable that it was the best possible experience for the player.”

Digital Spy is also reporting that there will be 5 DLC packs released between October and December. The first three will include new puzzles, exploration and combat and the remaining two are character packs, allowing users to play as “well-known videogame characters”.

  1. Tee Hee Hee… oh wait. That was childish.

  2. Interesting.
So, MS were pushing for it before it was ready, or the devs have belatedly found a problem with the online component.
I suppose we’ll never find out

    • I thought it was to get in that summer of arcade thing?
      apologies if i’m wrong cc.

      • so that would be the former rather than the latter then.

      • @beeje13

        Yeah, exactly.
Summer of arcade is very important, so perhaps its deadline for that means other parts of the game aren’t complete, or perhaps the emphasis of blame leaning towards the devs finding out the online is borked late in the game so pulled it

  3. I’m surprised that they just don’t push both release dates back a month

    • ‘Guardian of light’ is one of the titles in the Summer of Arcade promotion that XBLive is currently running. I guess delaying the release until autumn wouldn’t sit well with the marketing department.

  4. Alternative title. “Gimped but still getting it”. Lucky swines. Oh wait… there’s an Xbox 360 here! Win! :-)

  5. i’ll get the demo on the 360 and if the price is right and the game is good enough, i may get it on ps3 when i get one.

  6. or maybe the whole game wont fit on a single DVD so they need to release the extra content later on as DLC……and it will get people to buy HDD’s of microsoft if they bought the 4gb (hahahah 4???) version

    • It’s a arcade/psn game.

    • Shows what happens when you’re in a rush to make a fanboy comment

      *egg on face*

      • how am i supposed to know that what was once a big franchise turned into an arcade game.

  7. Clearly so badly wanting to get one over Sony, I find it kind of funny to see Microsoft bitten like this, either way, I’m interested in this game a lot and with my 360 in the midst of a sale I now look forward to September 28th.

    • Not really.

MS aren’t forcing them to do anything.

The devs/pubs are obviously this desperate to be part of the Summer Of Arcade promotion

  8. With DLC … i sense a disc next year before the TR9 release!

  9. ms have sunk lower. forcing them to release an incomplete game just to get one over that pathetic

    • Ridiculous. MS aren’t forcing anything.

Its a condition that if you want to feature in the Summer Of Arcade promotion that you are exclusive.

It’s the devs/pubs that are forcing it to get in on the promotion.

  10. Oooh… ouch. That’s going to be a bit of a bitter sting at the tail end of their big summer push.

No skin off my nose of course, as I’ll have been waiting for the PS3 version anyway. Much more looking forward to Scott Pilgrim this week to be honest :)
