Namco Bandai is very keen to get across the fact that the latest instalment in the ‘Ace Combat’ franchise is a rebirth rather than a continuation – hence why it wasn’t called ‘Ace Combat 7′.
This new video is by producer and director – Kazutoki Kono – and it’s quite interesting to hear his thoughts on the idea of ‘Steel Carnage’ – where the plane is akin to a human being; the oil is the blood, and the loss of fuselage is similar to the loss of body parts.

That was bloody awesome, Dan. I’ve quite enjoyed the Ace Combat series and I’m currently enjoying the 360 version that came out a little while back. It’s as fun as usual but Kazutoki Kono is so utterly spot on with his thinking I can’t help but feel absolute respect for him. The fact that he’s been brave enough to recognise this franchise has a certain sterility about absolutely every kill. They’re all carried out from a distance and it feels detached and by the numbers.
This new direction is obviously unrealistic but is the perfect example (from the Lunchtime Discussion we had recently) where you ground things in reality but turn the fun-factor dial up to eleven.
If they carry it off, I will be chomping at the bit. What a great direction to push the franchise. The trailer is a joy to watch.

Really looking forward to this, I was certainly impressed with the video showing the direction the new game is taking.
