Sony On Picking An HDTV

Over on The Sony Blog they have posted a video offering advice on choosing the right HDTV. Now, being a Sony-produced marketing aide trying to pass itself off as consumer advice it is naturally biased towards recommending bigger screen sizes than more impartial sources.  It also favours LCD TVs over Plasma TVs, obviously, as Sony do not produce or sell them, making some dubious statements as it does so.

The video really only has two things going for it.  The first that I could try and use it to persuade my bank manager that I really do need a 60″ TV instead of my current 40″ one, because “look, Sony say so”.  The second is that you get to watch Veronica Belmont, of Qore and Tekzilla fame, for a couple of minutes which is never a bad thing.  Providing the gaming angle, other than Ms Belmont’s position as Qore presenter, is a few seconds of previously seen GT5 footage towards the end of the video.

Yes, you are right, it is something of a slow news day and tangentially this does dovetail nicely with today’s Sunday Thoughts as it uses an attractive presenter to garner more interest in an otherwise bland and biased marketing message.  Clearly that is a technique that works on me.

  1. Not very subtle! Defo a slow news day ;-)

  2. I like Veronica. She’s a very nice person.

    • She looks like she’s been slapped across the face. Or she’s wearing clown make-up. How bizarre!

      • Maybe we should tell her she needs a new make-up artist. Might get a free telly. :P

      • I promise, pointing out a girl’s faults is never a way to her heart!

Woohoo, sunday afternoon guidance councelling! ;-)

      • You have a way with the ladies mike

      • Shes does read TSA you know….

      • I know, her face seems somewhat disfigured, especially around the jaw.

        how curious.

  3. I own a 32″ Panasonic Vierra. It’s perfect! My dad has a 40″ Sony Bravia. It looks no better!

  4. I have a KDL40 Bravia and it’s better than any TV anyone else I know has *Smug Mode: On*
Bravia Sync is superb, PS3/Surround Sound control with the remote plus Vaio and Ericsson recognition as soon as you enter the house – Space agey, just how I like it :D

  5. Heard on Twitter by Artefx that the latest Sony TVs include an ‘energy saving switch’ turned out it was the off button. Amazing! If only my ‘old’ plasma had one of them :p

Aside from that, in 3D faceoffs; I hear a lot of plasmas fair much better (not just a bit, but a lot) than LCDs, so it seems the arguement over which is better is set to continue for quite some time to come, won’t be a problem for most manufacturers as they have the facilities to manufacture both, unlike Sony who famously dumped their plasma facilities

    • Mine has that one way to glorify a power-off button.
Although after a while of being in standby, you get a satisfying click as it goes into deeper standby (more off :) ), so it does seem to get better.

  6. I love my 32 inch Toshiba… it maybe cheap n’all but its a great television

  7. I don’t pretend to know too much about this but I do know one thing. Moving from my 32″ Bravia (720p/1080i) to our 40″ Samsung Full HD downstairs (where my dad is usually failing on Call of Duty), I can easily see the difference between 720p and 1080p.

  8. Have a Sony Bravia KDL-37Ex403, its perfect!!

  9. I have a 42″ Panasonic Vierra Plasma TV…

… and I hate it (especially for gaming). The static parts of the screens still appear on screen (although now in greys instead of colours) when the screen goes blank and if I play the same game for to long (games with HUDs) I’ll even see the HUD appearing when the screen is not blank.
And I totally agree with her on the glare issue during daytime/sunlight, I always have to close my curtains if I truly want to enjoy my movie/game.
Next TV I get will be a LED/LCD or perhaps OLED.

    • That’s the biggest problem with plasma, if part of the image (like a HUD) is in the same place for a while it can leave a ‘ghost’ image of it on the screen which can be permanent.

  10. I also own a Panasonic Plasma. Admittedly, mine is quite a high end one but personally I haven’t seen an LCD that matches its depth of colour, blacks and motion handling ability. Playing COD on a friend’s 40 inch Samsung LED backlit LCD really bought the difference home. Smear central with blue tinted blacks. Truly awful.
