In this latest Rockstar Games video, the developers behind LA Noire talk about how they achieved that astounding facial performance capture. We’re really looking forward to seeing more from this as the atmosphere, setting and delivery all seems to be perfect.
While there have been big steps forward in MoCap technology and facial performance in games this year, Rockstar really looks to be moving on to a whole new level in subtlety and accuracy.
Take a look at the video and let us know what you think in the comments below.

That is amazing. Just amazing.

The problem I’m having with this game is the facial modelling/acting is so much better than the body of the character it looks to me like its been tacked on top so it clashes. They’ve spent all their time developing the facial stuff but used existing tech for the rest of the body.

There’s probably some performance related issues with applying the tech with the whole body.

I agree BryOnRye, but I think it’s a lighting issue. The animation is astounding but the tech obviously isn’t quite there to do shadow modelling just yet. The studio that they do the facial mo-cap in was saturated with light and this doesn’t appear to have been addressed once the captured data was added to the figures.
Having said that, it is amazing stuff and I’m very interested to see how this pans out. I imagine you’ll have a pick list of questions to ask which will provide the story arc, but trying to read people’s reactions will be pretty cool.
How soon before we get an online poker game featuring this tech? :-)

I feel the need of self-confession that I have never played a Rockstar game. This might just be the first exception to that rule.

Naughtydog have been using this in uncharted for a while now!

My god the realism is just crazy, I hope the gameplay and story follow suit.
