Custom Firmware Breaks PS3?

Earlier on it was reported that hackers had released the first custom PS3 firmware.

Tools from ‘KaKaRoTo’ allowed users to create their own firmware using Linux and some coding knowledge, but it didn’t appear to be that useful, with KaKaRoTo saying “this custom firmware is really meant for future homebrew installation”, and “will not allow piracy.”

The custom firmware does seem to have a side effect or two, though, with a post over on NeoGAF claiming that the user’s Trophies have gone and would not reappear, the save data has gone, along with the data utilities – “Pretty much everything under the ‘Game’ category”.

Ouch.

  1. I lol’ed.

    • laugh now cry later, it means NOTHING yet, PS3 is done

      • Kind of ironic how your name is ‘ilol’

      • it means nothing to me ether way will still buy my games.

      • Done? You do know that lots of people actually do support originals and that Sony can ban people who uses such hacks, just like MS most of the time can detect use of pirated games.

Is it a blow to the PS3? Did Sony fuck up majorly? Did they have it coming? Are you a troll?

        Yep, yep, yep and yep.

      • @skibadee, you’ll change your mind after you’ll meet people on PSN who are in godmode moving twice faster than you in your fav multiplayer game.

@erronueus, sony can’t ban CFW and pirated games, as they won’t be recognized as pirated but signed as offical.

“Did Sony f**k up majorly?” I think you don’t know what rally happened, it’s one of the biggest f’ups ever in consoles history

      • So I don’t know how they fucked up the use of Random(K) in their use of ECDSA, which made it possible to calculate the private key via some simple algebra, which was used for getting the root key…. nah you are right, I have no clue.

And off course they will try to detect the use of hacks. It’s not hard for them to include a hidden process in a firmware update, to detect such hacks. Can this be avoided and removed from custom firmwares, sure. But you can be damn sure somebody will be banned in the process. Will it be a mouse vs cat game for many years, sure.

Sony are screwed, but it’s naive to think they will not fight back.

      • more a SP guy, but when I do play multiplayer its with people I no & TSA members so should like I said mean nothing to me.

  2. Haha, he totally deserved it!

  3. Served them right.

  4. Good! Leave the firmware to Sony, eh guys!

  5. What a shame…not! Totally deserved it.

  6. Haha I bet they are P***ing themselves.

  7. Where did they get all the time

  8. What a pity!
They’ve only got themselves to blame.

  9. This story could only have got better had the PS3 taken photos of their lounge with the PSEye, jumped on it’s web browser and flogged all their furniture on eBay before knackering the save games.

  10. Tinkering with a ps3 is one thing but messing with your ps3 that you use for your trophies etc? That’s dumb! :P
